Question 2003 XKR rear 'R' badge/emblem

I have been looking at 2003 XKRs for sale. I've noticed some have the 'R' badge on the right side of the trunk above the bumper, while most seem to have it on the left. Why? What am I missing? I this correct?

I think the later models have it on the right, earlier on the left. On my 06, there is a
"4.2" badge on the left.

My 03 XKR has it on the left and the 4.2 badge on the right with the key hole for the trunk.

On my list of 'items to check on a potential purchase', position of the rear badges doesn't rate a high score in the priorities.

Is it just curiosity or are you concerned some of the vehicles you're viewing may have had accident repairs?

Yes, the possibility of having been in accidents is the main concern. Additionally, (I guess you cant "fake" an R without the supercharger), yet some adverts dont show the engine & I see some online sites selling that R badge (i.e. Jagbits). Perhaps early 03s had then on right while later 03s on the left?

For what it's worth, my left side R '03 is an early car.

It would take quite a punch to push the bumper in far enough to deform the quarters and cause replacement of both the badges (and mix them up). I'd expect you would be able to tell from more than the badging that it was hit that hard.

It was most likely a RHD/LHD difference until the bean counters put a stop to such customized nonsense.

It's a wonder they didn't also standardize the steeing wheel placement as a cost saving measure.

Check the panel gaps are regular. We've seen a number of vehicle ads posted where one side of the rear bumper is lower than the other. This can result from a minor tap but equally could be indicative of careless refitting after bodywork repairs.

Fitting louvred bonnets and 'R' badges is not unknown but, as you say, the engine can't be faked.

I didn't know the answer to the LH or RH badge position and hadn't really taken much notice before you raised the question so I looked it up:

For both the XK8 and the XKR, the badge with the keyway for the luggage compartment always goes on the RH (see items 1, 3 & 5 in the drawing). The badge without the keyway always goes on the LH (see items 2, 4, 6 & 7)

XKR badge 3 fits on the RH but XKR badge 4 fits on the LH.

There is a transition with a minor design change at VIN A36873 but LH and RH options were available throughout the entire production run.

Would anyone have the part number for the XKR rear badge with the key hole? I would like to replace the faded chiipped ones on my car. I ordered C2N2798 and it is wrong for my 2005 USA model, no hole. Thanks

SlateXKRcoupe,

My 2005 XKR came with the XKR with a Keyhole on the Right rear.....The Left (Driver's Side) had 4.2 on it.....But I changed it to 4.2S as I liked that better....If you want a new Badge look up Adamesh...they have them all but watch-out....they cost around $80.00
