Default 2004 XKR gear shift knob removal

I am trying to remove the gear shift knob from my 2004 XKR. Below the knob is a tapered chrome piece with three indents which I assume is a sort of jam nut that is supposed to keep the knob in place. Without loosening the chrome piece my knob turns but doesn't seem to come off. I have read several older posts from other members with this problem but I can't seem find the answer to how do I get this knob off! Has anyone had success in getting the knob off? If so how do I do it?

Alan

A normal 'jam-nut' is a 16mm 'across-the-flats' and grab the knob to turn in the opposite direction.

Yup and previous years apparently had a regualar 16mm jam nut. 2003 + have a chrome piece that acts like a jam nut with 3 indentations so an "appropriate tool" (quote from shop manual. LOL) can be used to loosen. Whatever the appropriate tool is I don't know but my problem is the knob does turn....it just doesn't come off.
