just forward of the drivers side rear tire - it is recessed under the floor pan and will have a small shield around it

Fuel filter can be reached in the front of the driver side rear wheel well. There is some interference from the coil spring, but nothing unmanageable. 30 min job, a bit more the first time I suppose. Beware that parts store will likely steer you towards a barb/screw type filter somehow, but you actually need a quick-connect type of fitting. Check the filter for the 4.2 L S-Type to be sure.

While you are there, take advantage to grease the halfshaft u-joint fittings, too.

Best of luck, keep us posted.

I did the job in March 2015 at just over 90,000 miles. No special tools were needed but jacking up and removing the left rear wheel gave me much easier access. I ordered a Motorcraft FG-986B fuel filter from amazon.com. Perfect fit on both hose connections but I did have to wrap the new filter canister with a couple layers of duct tape in order to make it fit snugly into its bracket for proper installation. Be sure to clean the grunge from the white plastic release clips on both sides of the hose connections. Once you do, it is much easier to see how to release them in order to remove your old filter and install your new one....

The small amount of fuel that leaked out of the old filter after removal was a greyish color. I made a mental note that a 60,000-mile change interval is probably a good idea....

This takes less than an hour to do and is fairly easy. I covered it in my working thread here.
