Default 2006 xk8 roof problem

Was advised starting new thread as my first ended up on two sites but thanks to all who tried help
roof had been working fine two years then last week message on dash said latch not closed roof was open so pulled over closed roof on button
Now unable to open on advice checked levels on fluid on bottom line so changed all fluid
I then used Allen key to open latch and clean and oil
Today called my local garage put electrics on machine checked and reset still not working was advised change around electric to go up and one to go down not confident enough to do that unless anybody has simple solutions I have found garage in herefordshire monkmoor motors who work on older cars

The relays are easy to swap. They are in the boot fuse box. Look like small plastic cubes. Just lift up swap positions and push back in. If the top will then open the relay was bad.

The relays are under the plastic cover with the fuses, right next to the battery.

Yes it is a good idea to swap the relays and they are located at the fuse box. Use this link and go to page #23 http://www.jagrepair.com/images/Auto.../jagxk2003.pdf

If your windows are going up and down I would believe that your lift rams are in the roof close position so in order to open the roof you will need to unlock the roof lift rams. They are located on the left and right side behind the rear seat and you can see them if you look behind the head liner. This is a picture of the lift rams http://www.jagrepair.com/images/Auto...oof%20Rams.jpg

In order to unlock the rams you must apply pressure down as illustrated in the photo. At that time you will be able to open the roof manually. Note; once you do this your rear quarter windows will not operate until the roof lift rams are locked and that is not easy to do without doing it electrically. They do not lock with a manual closing and latching the roof closed.

Once you have the roof open and the latch parked I would first close the petcock on the pump and do a hard reset on your car. The hard reset will clear all the miss operation attempts to operate the roof when it was not responding properly and it will clear your radio stations and you will need to reset your windows.

Now after the hard reset I want you to look at the header and in the middle where the latch is you will see a silver lever for a switch that is under it and my guess is that it is stuck. This has taken place on several cars because of the lubricant gumming up with old lubricant. Spray the lever with WD40 and work the linkage several times gently not to break or bend anything.

Go down to the 3rd set of photos and that silver looking thing has a switch under it. Be sure it moves freely..

I am thinking that that switch is sticking.

I hope this helps

In order to do the hard reset for the roof I found it is best to do it with the roof open and the latch parked/closed. Be sure that the petcock is open.

Yes it is difficult to unlock the rams but it can be done with a little extra effort.

Once you get the roof open you need to check that switch lever in the center of the header and make sure it is moving freely use WD40 to free it up. Do the hard reset close the petcock and close the roof electrically. When doing this do not let up on you roof switch until the roof operation is done. Off and on with the switch is what confuses the roof operation.

The roof as you said went down really easily started to wd40 all moving parts noticed electrical plug not connected thought that might be problem so investigated could not find other plug the other side is connected did find wire no plug and sealed closed.
So continued with hard reset after did plug on pump tried roof on switch nothing windows went down no noise at all

Okay when you closed the roof electrically did the latch in the header open, did the roof close and did the latch grab the roof and close?

Prior to closing the roof you need to have the roof open, latch closed and the petcock closed then do the hard reset. After that is done you will operate the roof electrically. At that time you should see the latch open then the roof close then the latch grab the roof and close.

It is important for me to know the sequence as it is closing to help you.

Did you lubricate the switch lever in the header and see it moving freely?

So the latch and roof are not moving? Do you have fluid in the tank to the top embossed line? Is the petcock closed (clockwise)? Is the pump running?

Have you done anything to the car prior to the roof issue?

Did you have the rear windows down when the top and latch were in the complete open position, that is all the way down and latch closed into the header rail.
If windows were up, that would put the whole thing out of sequence.

When you press the close button and you hear a chime the security module is saying the roof is about to close. The front windows will drop a little and the roof latch will open when the latch opens the roof will begin to rise. When the roof is up the switch in the right ram will telling the security module to begin closing the latch. Once the latch is closed then the security module will close the windows.

I am not saying the windows up are the cause but based on my experience I do not think it is part of the problem. Only the people with the modification to the quarter windows open/close button can answer this question.

On one of the threads it was mentioned that the windows did go up and down and that tells me that the right ram switch was working.

The pump has a fuse and top up and top down relays.

To check the pump running you will need another person at the pump when you press the close button. They should hear the pump turning/working.

This pump draws a lot of current from the battery and it could be that the battery is low or you have a blown fuse or one of the relays are bad.
