Default 9-3 play on rear wheel

I checked for play on the rear wheels today, there is slight play 12 - 6 on both sides, from reading other posts I understand that this is fairly typical. No 9-3 play on the near side but there is a small 9-3 play on the off side, similar to the 12-6 play.

Can anyone suggest what the issue could be?

Its a 2002 XK8 4.2, all that's been eliminated is loose wheel bolts.

I'd be looking at hub bearings and hub carrier pivot bearings next.

You need 10 posts before you can download attachments from the forum so I can't put a PDF here for you. I've put the Rear Wheel Bearing replacement procedure on my MediaFire account and you can download it from there:

JTIS - 2002 Rear Wheel Bearing.pdf

You may have to paste this link into a new browser tab.

If the play is more a concern rather than a potential MoT failure, you may want to monitor it rather than start throwing on new parts. As you'll see from the PDF, both hub bearings and pivot bearings need workshop facilities to replace and the ££'s mount up.

Thanks for that, I think it is a bit of movement in the carrier pivot as the bearing sounds smooth.

Although not good news, it's better than hub bearing problems. The pivot bearings are normally replaced with a new sleeve and pivot bolt. British Parts UK list these as a kit:

HUB CARRIER BEARING KIT

A fully reconditioned hub may be worthwhile once the hub is off. Wards at Colchester offer an overhaul/exchange service:

The very best reconditioned brake calipers, jaguar axle componenets, brake calipers, hubs, differentials polyurethane bushes also wheel bearing kits, drive shaft ujs, cobra axles for dax, ak,

Eurojag at Darlington used to offer a similar service although it's not listed on their website.

I had the new pivot bearings replaced today, I'm glad I did not try to do it myself, they had a hell of job getting the old outer bearing shells out. All in labour and parts £150.
