Hi All!

I have a 97 XK8 Convertible I bought last year - has 47K on it. This week, she has started to act up (I have 3 Land Rover D2's, so British vehicles acting up is nothing new). Here is a sequential list:

1) Key fob stopped working (waiting on new battery - meanwhile using spare key)
2) Steering column stuck in "off" position (fully retracted) - can still go up/down when on, but telescoping is non-functioning - instead makes crunching noise when I turn the key.
3) Steering radio controls ceased to work.
4) Radio ceased to turn off. Now, whenever the vehicle is on, the radio is on. I cannot adjust the volume, station, CD/Tape etc... If the vehicle is on and I have a tape inserted, I cannot eject. However, tape will eject when vehicle turned off.

The Heated seats, climate control is all functioning.

So, any advice? I am thinking new steering column and maybe fuses for radio?

I am comfortable with simple repairs and have a good mechanic for anything more intense.

The proper name for this function is "reach" (other one is "tilt"). If you search this forum for "reach", there are quite a few posts (Google "reach site:https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/xk8-xkr-x100-17/" for the best results). I gather the repair/replacement is pretty involved.

Sounds like you hear noise when trying to reach. Is it click click (some have described as cash register)? If yes, points to broken reach cable.

while a pita to replace they are still available.

just for a free chance, I'd do a hard reset.
You will have to reset windows and input radio security code if your radio needs one (code =super rare for north America cars, almost non existent).

I'm betting on broken cable, from your description, turn key on (car tries to extend the reach to memorized driving position, it doesn't move, you hear click click...)

Battery: remove + cable. Touch it to negative cable/terminal for 20 seconds. Reattach and see the effect.

now reset WIindow travel.
