Default 97 XK8 key fob programming issues

Just picked up a 97 xk8 with 2 remotes which don't work. Tried going through the programming method (get the light on the shifter console to flash) then nothing. Push 1 button, all 4, pushing 5 times etc. Did take them apart and have good batteries. Alarm works just fine via the key. Part number is LJA2610AA 315 Mhz on the fobs. Any ideas what to look at next?

Thanks

Try thoroughly cleaning the gold button contact areas in the remotes with isopropyl alcohol. Make sure all the black residue is removed. Also clean the black rubber disks. Also clean the battery contacts and make sure the batteries are producing over 3 volts.

If you still have the problem, then the Security Lock Module is suspect.

Everything is clean, where is the security lock module and how do I test it?

It is snapped in place under the fusebox in the trunk. You need to unbolt the fusebox (disconnecting the battery first would be wise) to get to it. Make sure the antenna cable is connected and not damaged.

Before you dig into that, try removing the car's battery cable for 60 seconds and reconnecting it and try the remote programming again. Repeat a few times if it does not work the first time.

No easy way to test the SLM that I know of. You can take your remotes to Advance Auto and they should have a remote tester there though.

I guess I should get the radio security code before I try any of that though. Didn't know Advance could test the remotes. Will try that in the mean time.

The vast majority of US market Jags do not need the radio security code, but I have heard of one or two exceptions.

Yeah I've never needed it replacing batteries, reseting with a hard start on our XJR or X type but figure it'll be when I don't have it is when I'll need it.

Last night I did manage to find one of the remotes had a working light button which programmed. Cleaned both real good again and now have one working remote. Weird thing is it makes no noise, no chirp, no lights flashing when you use it. Guess she's a silent cat as she doesn't make noise when the keys or lights are on and you open the door either.

Now time to address the cupholder issue next I suppose.
