ASI as mentioned in JimmyL's link seems to be the go-to repairer in the US.
No - it's not fatal, but replacements are getting harder to find if yours is not repairable (unique to the 97 x100)

97 xk8 will not start with new battery
Last update on this issue. I was told that the issue was computer related and $500 later, we have a resurection. I will recommit myself to starting the car on a regular basis and enjoying an open top ride more frequently.
