Cool 99 XK8 oil leak

Hi All,

I have an engine oil leak at the back of the engine in my 99 XK8, which seems to be coming from the threaded plug that is right above the main seal on the back of the engine.

Does anyone have any suggestions for the correct procedure for sealing this plug correctly?

I have removed and replace the washer and still have leak. Is there a special kind of washer, seal, etc; required?

Thanks for any help!

Ron

Attached is page 4 of the SNG Barratt parts catalog. You can go to the advertising header and download a free copy. The plug appears to be first a CORE plug and then a Plug with a washer. The core plug is probably the source of the leak. It looks like a plug in a plug style.

By the way there aren't that many owners of both XJ8's and XK8's so be careful and post in the XK8 forum for the most responses to your questions next time.

The first time I replaced a rear main on a AJ-V8 engine I had to pull the trans back out. When I saw that the 17mm Allen plug above it was leaking, I was in disbelief! Since then, I've put a bead of silicone on the shoulder of the plug, installed new rubber/aluminum washer followed by another bead of silicone on top of the washer where it meets the block. Overkill? You bet! Won't come back leaking?!?! You bet! It was a live and learn situation.

I've moved your post to the XK8/XKR section for better response

Are you saying that the rear main seal replacement was unnecessary and the leak was from the plug alone? Is this plug accessible without too much dismantling?

The reason I ask is I get a 2" diameter drip after each outing from what I assumed was the rear main seal. Maybe it is wishful thinking, but that could be an easier solution.

Thanks

Andy

No, it's not really easier. You still have to pull the transmission and flywheel, and the odds are pretty good it's the rear main seal. Just order a seal and replace it. You may want to remove and reseal the plug if it isn't leaking, but I didn't bother.

There was a TSB for weeping from the cylinder heads. You might check that???

Also had a few 'Porous Blocks' back in the late 1990s but they usually manifest themselves early on (not decades later?).

The oil actually weeps through the aluminum block and pools in the hollow valley under the intake manifold (under the diamond shaped rubber plug) then drips down the back of the engine.

Look here.................
