99 XK8 top wont latch - no shower
My convertible top stopped raising nearly fully closed with the back windows down. No noise no shower when I press the switch, fuses 1 and 14 in the trunk looked good, replaced anyway, still nothing. I had the top hydraulics rebuilt a year ago, and have probably only had the top down a dozen times since.
Appreciate any help!!

You will find the pump in the tank on the right above the CD changer. If you look at the tank to the right of the pump the fill hole is at the top of that tank. The pump can be filled without removing the pump from the rack. The fluid is Pentosin CHF 11S JagRepair.com - Jaguar Repair Information Resource and you can get it at your local parts store for 1/3 the price that Jaguar wants. JagRepair.com - Jaguar Repair Information Resource I hope this helps.

The pump not running is another problem. This system is a series of switches and control units that must be in sequence, when the button is pushed up and down when it is not responding for another reason it will shut the system down. Check your fuses then check the relays (one for up and another for down) you can swap them with each other and see if it works. Check your PM I need additional info from you.

Top wont latch or retract.
OK Gus was kind enough to call and we have a tentative plan of attack. Most likely I "confused" and locked my top while pressing the switch both up and down while the top was locked for another reason. I seem to recall doing this at a speed that might have been slightly too fast for the top to operate. You can confirm the severe thunderstorm and quarter sized hail in Louisville Saturday :-( My plan is to start the car and let it run for a few minutes to charge the battery then:
1)operate the up switch for at least 40 seconds for it to go through the whole logic cycle. If this fails then wait a minute and press the switch down for the same 40 seconds.
2)Top off the fluid in the hydraulic pump and try (1) over. no dice then:
3)Manually open the latch with an allen wrench and try (1) over, then manually close the latch and try (1) over. If no then:
4)Disconnect battery. Manually lower top by opening hydraulic valve and pushing down on top with two fingers - if this doesnt work I have to get access to the lifting rams and push down on the top of them to get them to release. My hope is since the top isnt completely up this won't be necessary, because access to the rams sounds involved. I then have to make sure the latch is in the correct position, which I believe is retracted (which it seems to be currently) with the allen wrench. Close the hydraulic valve reconnect the battery, run for a few minutes then hold the top button closed for 40 seconds to reset logic, wait a minute and see if the top will raise normally (hold open for 40 seconds otherwise).
5) Switch the two small relays above and below each other at the fuse box. Try (1) again.
I may have this confused but I wanted to capture the thoght process diving in...

Open the petcock at the pump
Manually open the roof by hand
Manually close the front latch
Check the fluid level and close the petcock at the pump
Close the roof electrically (the button) with the engine running
The sequence of the roof is that the windows will lower if they are not down, the latch will open, the roof will go up, the latch will grab the roof and close, then the windows will go up when the catch is successful in locking

Success!!
My top wouldnt retract with the petcock opened - realized it was fully extended but not latched. Couldnt get the front of the rear seat out (?) to go after the hydraulics and decided to just close the latch manually as it was next in the closing sequence - and see what happened. Did so (petcock open) then closed the petcock and connected the battery and hit the close button. Eureka! Rear windows slid up and I got my chime. Double checked the fluid (never lost any) and raised and lowered a couple times - hopefully good to go. I got lucky - and probably would have been out several hundred dollars at the dealer if Gus hadnt given me the courage to tackle it. Thanks again!!
