Default Air Con code 44

Hi guys

I have a code 44 showing for the air-con system and the JTIS states,"Defrost vent motor fault-harness/connector fault-servo motor siezed or sticking-flap seized or sticking". What the hell is a "defrost vent motor", and any ideas of a fix?

Cheers

This sounds familiar from XJ40 saloon days long ago. They had a problem with the two servo motors bolted on the side of the AC unit. These small electric motors used to burn out.

Selecting defrost, a small motor rotates to move a flap and redirects all the air to the screen. On the 40's there was a second motor and flap to direct air to the footwell. The XK8 is likely to be a development of this arrangement.

Is this a new car to you? If so have you attempted to clear the fault to see if it is a reoccurring problem? Never had a reason to work on a problem like this but would like to know what you come up with.

Gus,

I thought (emphasise thought) the Climate Control self test facility was discontinued on later years. Am I dreaming this?

Graham,

I have no formal information on the MY that it will work on, I do know it works on my 95 XJ6 & 99 XK8. However, it is worth a try and if it does not work and I find out about it I will identify that on my page.

Gus,

I'll go and try it on mine - back in 5.

Gus,

It doesn't work on my 2005.

I remember it worked on my 2000 XJ8L but never had any reason to try it on my 2001 XK8 (now sold).

Keith,

Not the result you wanted.

To give you a better idea of where these two servos are, this is the parts manual illustration:

Air Con code 44-xk8_2003_ac.jpg

Items 3 and 4 are the Servo Motors and they are bolted to the left side of the AC unit. Item 2 is the AC Module where the harness connects. You should be able to get to all of these by removing the lower dash liners.

The electrical gurus here will be able to advise how to the test the harness and servo connectors before you even consider removal and replacement of the motors.

Its not uncommon for the cheap sticky foam tape seals on the edges of the flaps to come loose, hang down, and jam the flaps. This can be trickly to get to but it may not be the motor. Sometimes the foam is so deteriorated that it eventually disintegrates, then falling away or blows out the vents and the fault will clear. A car the quality of these deserves a rubber edge seal, not 2 cent sticky weatherstripping foam.

I thought if you could read it then you could clear it unless the problem is identified again resulting in the inability to clear it.

+1

Keith,

So you can't clear the code and it's looking like a harness or component problem?

The following guide to the AC system has some good general layout illustrations:

XK8_XKR_2003_AirCon.pdf

Page 1 (item 3) is the AC unit. Page 5 shows the servos (items 2 and 3) and the air outlet flap (item 5) where oldmots warned about the foam seals failing.
