If they put a set of gauges on it and the pressure readings are good I would be looking at the pressure switch. Just an FYI the pressure switch is often the problem. If the Freon is low then do what you need to do. Let us know how it goes.

What they're threatening to do is a part fill with lots of dye, then I go back after a few days and they check for leaks. Seems a bit odd but still...
Will post results and costs!

Gus, do you know if the pressure switch on a 1997 can be removed without discharging the system...a schrader valve in place, perhaps? I've got a bad pressure switch (thanks to some diagnostics by WhiteXKR and SteveinFrance), but I don't know if it's something I can replace myself or not.

Let me know what you think, if you please.

I saw that he was on another tread of the same nature and it was the pressure switch and had hopes that his problem was the same.

My problem's not the switch, if I jumper the clutch I don't get cold air.
Going on Saturday for the diagnosis.
Always amused by the US use of 'presently' I'll do it presently means 'immediately' in the US, or 'when it suits me' in the UK.
As Norri says, I'll do it presently!

Today's Wednesday and going on Saturday for the diagnosis. That's counts as indecent haste in the Dordogne.

FIXED!!!
It was the Schrader type fill valve.
A little 'family firm' Feu Vert (a bit like the Petit Casino franchise) had it for a couple of hours (of which half was telling the mechanics what HP, 0-100 km times etc) and found the valve was shot. They replaced it, refilled, left it an hour and rechecked and reckon that's the problem. €69 including the valve. Fingers crossed chaps !!

Excellent, a good result.

My beloved is with the techs today, and hopefully I'll have cold air blowing soon. I fear it won't be anything as simple as a bad schrader valve, however.

Hopefully that's it. I've had small leaks before where it takes about one week to lose enough refrigerant to be noticeable. Also, make sure your schrader valve caps are tightly on. Thanks for the shortly update.

Default Adding refrigerant

And if you are going to add a bottle of refrigerant, you might as well add a bottle of refrigerant with dye (as they are the same price as refrigerant without dye). And if you are doing that, you should spend about $10 at amazon or wherever for a UV light.
Every time I've had an AC issue on any car it has always been a leak. As a side result of the leak, you get low pressure, which prevents the compressor from running and hurting itself. Incidentally, you an also buy a vacuum pump on amazon for about $100 (to suck all the air out / evacuate the system).
When you do jumper it, once you hear the AC clutch engage then you know the problem and should then un-jumper it. By jumping it now, you can get your answer immediately without having to buy anything.
I realize this is an old post. But it's still out there. And people are reading it. It's not a good idea to just add refrigerant without knowing it's needed. Having too much will cause problems also. It can even cause damage or injury. The better thing to do if you don't have gauges to check the pressure would be to jumper the pressure switch as the OP suggested.
