Default Are all door latches the same?

Hi Folks,

I have the dreaded "door ajar microswitch" problem on the 2004 XKR Coupe and rather than swap the switch (and potentially get it wrong) I thought I would swap the entire latch (thanks to Sam's excellent youtube video).

I have seen several different latches for sale on ebay and all have different part numbers but seem to be the same. As the doors never changed I am guessing the latches didn't either?

Can anyone advise if any latch will fit?

Thanks in advance folks!

The latches are different from left to right and are designated as 'deadlocking' and 'Except deadlocking'. Which do you have?

The latches are also different for RHD and LHD vehicles.

Hi NBCat,

I have a RHD with deadlocking and I need the passenger (left) door latch.
It's a UK car so should any passenger door latch work from another UK car?

For a RHD vehicle with deadlocking, the LH door latch carries part number GJA1081EK. All RHD deadlocking LH door latches appear to be the same.

I hope this helps!

When a vehicle is deadlocked (also called double locking), an intruder cannot simply break a glass to reach through and open the door using the interior handle - the interior handle is inoperative. It's an additional level of security.

This is the way it works on European specification vehicles:

If you have double locking fitted, a second press of the remote (within 3 seconds of first press) double-locks all doors and sets the alarm system. Once double-locking is completed one signal will be heard and the direction indicators will give one long flash.

The US security system specification has some differences and this MAY not be the same there.

If you can remove/refit a door latch assembly then your skills are certainly sufficient to replace a microswitch.

Note the error in Sam's video in the section on removing the latch link which is a good way to break it. This is the correct way to split the link:

I am about to remove my drivers door latch in order to replace the door ajar micro switch. I'm not sure that I understand the photos above. Is the procedure to :

Push the black collar downward and then apply sideways pressure to the the steel rod ?

CORRECT

The lower section stays on the door latch. Trying to pop it out of the latch arm as Rev Sam describes in the video is an almost certain way to break it.
