Default Always Something! Transmission Fault

A couple of afternoons ago I was driving around, top down after a late afternoon round of golf, thinking about how since I replaced tensioners, timing chains, etc. about three months ago, I hadn't had a single warning/idiot light flash on the dashboard for probably the longest time since I owned the car (about 3 years). (Even my airbag sensor light has somehow turned itself off for months) Of course, the Jaguar gods must've been monitoring my thoughts as the next afternoon I got a transmission fault display on my way home. I hoped it was an aberation but alas, the next morning same fault along with very hard shifts from first to second. As I had already spent about $3K tracking down transmission problems less than a year ago, I was not happy. I took it in to my mechanic and it posted p715 speed sensor code, the same as about a year ago. Well, the sensor was replaced again, yesterday, and at least it made it home without any repeat warnings. We'll see what happens over the next few days. Remind me to never think things are good again, it's bad karma.

Hope the new speed sensor fixed your issue. But how old is your battery? Keep in mind that weak or dying batteries cause these vehicles to throw all sorts of spurious fault codes....

Although since I have owned the car I have had no battery issues of any kind, I planned on testing it today just because of how critical it seems to be to almost every function/sensor in the the electrical system. Hopefully, there are no other issues, but I'm always nervous 'til a couple of weeks have passed with no further incidents.

Interesting, I just got this code too! I will be replacing the conductor plate on my 02 xkr's 722.6 as that seems to be the way to go based on some research i did over on the MB forums... fingers crossed

FYI, I originally thought this might be battery related as well. Now running a brand new battery, code persists.

I had in the early part of the year replaced the conductor plate as well as the speed sensor, wiring harness and just about everything other than a rebuild because when the trans was opened up, it looked fine. And since then it has run without problem for about a year (except for the first day when it trans faulted twice and then never came back). This time we went with just the speed sensor as the code (p715) suggested, and so far, after two days and a hundred or so miles, no codes. I do notice and firmer shift from first to second and second to third, not violent like it did a couple of days ago, just firmer. We'll see what happens...

Although cleaning or replacing sensors seems to solve problems most of the time, it is only half of the story.

Both of you might want to try taking out the sensor and looking at the teeth on the ring itself. The sensor has to "see" these teeth to work properly as the sensor is a hall effect type.

Grant Francis explained a couple of days ago that his problem was solved by removing years of accumulated dirt+grease. He did it by picking out the grooves with a small screwdriver.

Thanks for the tip plums! I assume the teeth on the ring are accessible after dropping the valve body?

I'm pretty sure Plums is talking about the speed sensors at the wheels.

I believe the P715 code associated with a transmission fault refers to the speed sensor in the transmission; on the 722.6 MB tranny it's located on the "conductor plate" attached to the valve body unit. Based on the MB link above that one seems to be a common problem with the benz 722.6.
