Default Argh! Broke the windscreen...

On the plus side , I now have my working rear view mirror fitted onto my (new) windscreen...

On the down side, I don't half feel like an idiot.

For what it's worth, the clip has to slide *down* the windscreen, not *up* as some of the internet instructions seem to indicate - and it is insanely easy to crack the screen...

Yes, it slides down to come out and up to go in. Which tutorial did you use?
Don't feel too bad, I had a professional tech break mine doing the same thing!

On a different car I tried using cerium oxide and a buffer to remove the scratches. Cerium oxide is used to polish glass. After an hour or two of buffing there was no noticeable difference so I gave up. My glass was really clean, though.

If you have hours and hours to spend you might be able to polish out the tiny chips, but it would take forever. Also, you run the risk of making the glass wavy, which would distort your view out of the windshield.

I did the same thing on a previous car trying to actually sand the windshield with a kit. 3 different grits on a polsisher, to remove small scratches and pits. The windshield looked like new, after having to get rid of the old one after destroying it, and putting a new one in. It didn't work for me.

Thanks for your prompt replies.Doesn't sound that it's possible to fix my windscreen without the sun its fine you cant really see any marks so will keep my sun glasses close by.In the UK its no big deal!
Thanks again Alan.

In the States, I have AAA auto insurance. A rock chipped the windscreen.

When I called the local claims office, they wanted bill me for the whole cost of a new windscreen minus my deductible. Then when I called the nationwide claims office, they said I could get the whole windscreen removed & replaced for about $25.
