That's the plug for the microphone if you have a phone installed.

 

Called Sybesta and was told they do not repair the mirrors that have a slide type installation, only the push button style. Unfortunatly I have a slide style. Anyone have another repair shop that will do the repair?

 

Well, this stinks. I put the car in the garage last night and everything was fine. Go out today to go to the store and I have a oval circle in my mirror just like the picture in the first post in this thread. Now I get to explore the adventure of getting my old mirror off and a new one back on. I really want to thank everyone for all of the information in this thread and the forum in general. It makes all of these unique things that make these cars so special, but at the same time add a degree of complexity to them, a lot easier to deal with.

Noticed my mirror was loose and pushed back up. I will have to check to see if I need to replace as well.

How did you pry off the the little grey or black plug connected to the rain sensor? Mine is starting to separate (top of the plug).

It's been a while since I did it, but I think the little piece on the right that sticks out of the rectangle needs to be pushed in to release a little clip.

 

Thanks Keith. I did get the little plug out but the problem was it was broken at the ridge line. I super glued it and hope it stays together.

 

Suppose one does not want the auto-dimming function.....I read that a Dremel does away w/it. How is it done??

 

Not certain on a '97, but on mine there is an on/off switch at the bottom center of the mirror and a level adjust at the bottom rear.

 

Same on my '00. Just push the bottom button and the light turns off.

I gave up looking for a reasonable cost solution, removed the auto mirror, bought a 8" manual day/night mirror, glued a new mount on the windshield, installed the new mirror and for $14.00 no one knows the difference. When I drive at night it is very easy to flip the dimming lever and I saved $400

 

Hey all, my mirror went quite some time ago, so I just turned the auto-dim off. The oval in the middle has gotten to the point that I distorts the image terribly. I went to the scrap yard and pulled one off an XJ that was there and nearly complete if you can believe that. Now, the new mirror has a plug for the rain sensing wipers and my car doesn't have them. My old mirror has 4 or 5 wires and the new one has 8 or 9. Also, my old mirror has a brown wire and the new one doesn't. I figured I would just cut the connector from the old mirror and solder it onto the new mirror's wiring. Anyone know which wires I need to keep if there is a black wire on the new and brown wire on the old?

Just bought a 97 XJR and of course it needs a new mirror? Any problems with getting it done?

 

No problems for most owners who can perform simple maintenance jobs. Read the beginning of this thread for DIY instructions.

 

I just found that the RV mirror on 98 XK bit the dust. My hope has arisen after finding the article on the replacement from Sybesma's, however I'm not all that comfortable with the removal and installation. Is this best left to a Jag dealer or windshield installer?

After reading the many articles, and the detailed procedure posted by GordoCat, I opted for the safe way and went to the local Jag dealer. Interesting, they wouldn't tackle the job, but suggested "their glass installer". He came today and was unable to do the job. Said he would do more research and call back...I don't have a warm fuzzy feeling that I'll hear back. I did have feeling that I might be able to do the job, looks like I will.

 

My '98 XJ8L mirror is shot in this same way...and additionally does not stay attached to the windshield. The clip is there, but there is no connection to the center of the square peg on the windshield to hold it in place.
When these folks refurb the mirror, does that get fixed as well??

I retrofitted photo chromic door mirror glasses to mine recently after retrofitting powerfolds , for information , they are "plug n play" and work perfectly ,

Same thing on my 2001 Volvo XC70. It is my wife's daily car and I did not know about the repair. So I bought a manual dim from a junker and put it in. I'll send the auto dim off for repair now.
