I have a 2006 XK8 with auto on/off headlights. My symptoms are: 1) when in Auto, my lights are always on regardless of day or nighttime. 2) when headlights are set to Off, I get the dash warning “Lights Are Off” even during the day. I think I have a bad sensor in the mirror. My problem is there are so many posts on this topic I’m not sure what the remedy is. Some point to the mirror. Some to the stalk on the steering column. Is there a definitive solution to this? If the mirror, can I fix the sensor or do I have to replace the whole mirror? Thanks

 

I thought the light sensor was the small bump in the top of the dash....??

 

from reading posts, my understanding is the small bump is a solar sensor that drives the climate control system, not the headlights

 

Yes, the sensors are in the mirror itself, front and back. The one on the side of the windscreen is the ambient light sensor. You might want to start by checking the mirror wiring is all ok, no broken wires or dirty connections. Do you have auto dim mirrors also and do they work?

 

Thanks. Yes I have the auto dim mirror and it is indeed working (dims to a blue color when I shine a flashlight into the receptor that faces the rear of the car when I’m a dark garage with the headlights on).

Working on removing the mirror to see what’s what.
