Default Automatic Volume Control (AVC) question

I have a 1998 with Premium Sound (Harmon Kardon). If you press the volume control knob for a few seconds, AVC comes up on the display. One can set it to any of 5 levels (1 through 5) , or AVC Off.

I can't seem to tell if this is working, or not so I wanted to ask: "how is is supposed to work?"

From the user manual it is supposed to maintain a volume level, so I assume it is supposed to increase/decrease depending on ambient noise. Is that how it is supposed to work? Does anyone actually "hear" it working? Is there any way to test it that you can think of? This is supposed to work with the audio, not the telephone right?

Like I said I can't tell if it works so I wanted to check to see if I understand this feature. Any knowledge you can share is appreciated.

Thanks,

John

I think it's engine noise so either revs or speed.

This feature has been around on cars for a while now (this is the third I have owned with this feature). The effect is very subtle and it is meant to increase volume, somewhat, based on speed. At a stop there is no volume "boost" but as you speed up the boost is enough so that the volume seems the same as it was when stopped. I always keep mine on 5 (the highest setting) and you can check the effect by turning it off a while and then back on.

I have the same setup, and the first volume step happens around 35mph. It's set to 3, and the change is quite noticeable. Second is around 60 IIRC- not that I get that one very often, mind

Thanks guys, I was begining to think it wasn't working. I just didn't know when or how to look for it changing things.
