Question Backup gearbox plan?

Hello fellow jag lovers. I recently asked for help re my then new purchase of a 1999 XK8 which had/has a gearbox problem, it bumps/jumps a bit when moved from P to R. The gearbox oil and filter were changed but I had to store the car after the work was done, a week later I started the car to move it outside to take some pics for the forum and it bumped/jumped when put into reverse. My mechanic who did the oil change is not convinced the gearbox needs changed or refurbed. I am just looking at a backup plan in case the worst happens. I can get a second hand box for about £450 and then another £400 for fitting or there about. Or has anyone bought an A drum and valve set and changed them to cure this problem? Would this be a job an Indy would be capable of undertaking or would it be a specialist ( shudder after last specialist encounter ) only repair?
The car is in storage now and I cannot stop thinking about work that needs doing. Have new tensioners ready to fit as well as a new drive belt, and from forum advice should take about 3-4 hrs to fit.
On Sunday I have a rep for a leather company coming to match the dye I need for my seat repair, he will mix the dye on site, so I will be taking notes and post the results with pics if he allows it.
So, its starting to come together now, but I am impatient, so I hope no one minds me putting up a post to ask for a bit of advice now and again.
