Default Body module ( computer )

I am pretty certain from reading codes and other diagnostics that I need to replace the body control module for my 2004 XK8 base model. From what I can figure out they are "plug & play" and don't need programming and are all the same for 2003 -2006 mdel years . Can anybody confrm that the body control module for 2003 -2006 are all the same ?

You need to read up on the VID block and communication networks.

There are threads on module replacement and the problems associated.

A basic TSB explains some of the issues.
Here is one we got almost 20 years ago.

XKs from VIN A30645 onward have almost NO 'plug&play' modules!

Sadly, the local Jag dealer has no information and will do only the most basic ( DIY capable) work on any Jag pre 2010.
The auto door locks , remote boot and gas cap openers, and the back up sensors have stopped working on my car and neither the key fob nor the keys will unlock the doors
My son in law is a certified mechanic ( but works mostly on mid sized construction equipment ). He has looked at the codes using my iCarsoft reader and he thinks that the CAN bus is not communicating with the body control module and that I need to replace this module. This is all much beyond my understaning ..so I reached out here

I can obtain a used body control module farly easily but , if it won't work without the dealer programming it ...I am at a loss as to what to do

The Body Processor Module does not sit directly on the CAN:- it is on the 'other' (SCP) network. Communication between the two is managed by the Instrument Cluster which acts as a translator/bridge.

The door modules and the remote releases for the boot & gas cap (via the security/locking module) also sit on the SCP network so it's possible there's something else adrift, although the BPM is a possibility.
Is the hood/top also malfunctioning?

If you can post the raw codes from your reader, it may help to narrow things down.

First thing I would try is a battery off reset - this does solve a few issues in my (limited) experience of strange electric behaviour. You've got nothing to lose trying

@Michaelh : This started when the top refused to go up... ...I started checking fuses etc and then the back up sensors, boot and gas cap opener and auto door locks stopped working as well

It 's waist deep snow between house and garage , when I can get out there I will read the codes agin and post them

@ Rod : the first thing I did was a hard reset ..it had no effect . the battery is in god sahpe as well.

Thanks all for teh suggestions and help. This is the first bit of trouble I have had in 5 years . The car runs perfectly otherwise ...this stuff is more of an inconvenience thna anything. It is a "bother " having to get out of the car to unlock the boot ...or open the boot, fuble under the side trim and open the fuel lid .........reverse sensors are also a big help when the yop is up

I keep forgetting Occam's razor...

Not sure how far you got with the fuses, but check F1 (5A) and F10 (10A) in the trunk fusebox once you manage to dig your way out. If there is an issue with the security module and the reversing lamps aren't working, that might explain the parking aid fail also.
