Default 2004 Jaguar XKR - Blower Motors/Fans Not Working

HellO All! Been a while. Goodness knows I've been thinking about ya. Feeling guilty actually.
Yall have given me so much more (made owning my now 3 Jaguars possible) than I've given in return - and I appreciate that!

I have an excuse though. My WIFE and I purchased a new (old) Victorian house here on Staten Island and I have crawling all over this thing like a squirrel for the last year and a little more. Whole new learning curve in restoring old woodwork and removing old PAINT +++++. Old paint is going to be the death of me, really! Been an all consuming adventure I'll say. More, changed jobs and I almost NEVER drive anymore. Rarely an occasion to. It makes me sad. Anywho,,,

I have an issue and I'm hoping folks can help me and offer me some guidance before I start digging in. This is the FLOODED 2004 that I brought back to life - if some of y'all remember that fiasco? Believe it or not she rarely/never gives me problems these days or since the day that I finally figured out the last couple problems. As far as the HVAC goes I did have to replace every single last one of the individual solenoids that open and close all of the HVAC flaps behind the dash. No fun and now,,, the blower fans are NOT working. They were working, but not anymore.

What happens(ed),,, over the last couple drives the blowers (or maybe it was one of them and only ONE ever worked, and I didnt know) slowly lost power. Today (very cold out) I got in the car and was surprised to find that the blower(s) came on on start up. By the time I made my 30min drive to Brooklyn it had stopped. During the drive it was kind of going up in down in speed,,, and eventually went back to doing what its been doing the last couple of drives, and it stopped working all together.

Is this a relay do you think? Are there something with the internals of these units (like the XJS) that give out over time?
I learned where the blower relays may be in THIS THREAD. Is that the same for the 2004?

I figured I'd ask the GURUS before digging in so I can have some kind of a plan or direction.
What say you?

Super appreciative for any and all willing to share the hard worked for wisdom and experience.

Hi Jay - long time no see...

Congratulations - or should that be commiserations? - on the new house. Should keep you out of mischief for a while

That might be closer to reality than you think... They used to put all sorts of noxious stuff in old paint:- lead being one ingredient. Get some lead-indicator sticks (like cotton buds/Q-tips) to test it if you're sanding down.

According to the EG, there are still the relays.
Fuse F10 (10A) in the driver side fascia fusebox, and fuse F11 (20A) - one in each fascia fusebox - provide power to the relay coils and the fans. Not likely to be blown as it's intermittent, but could be some corrosion around them.

Each fan also has an internal speed control module which can fail. I'd check with a multimeter to see where the power is disappearing.

Goooooood Morning, Mike!
Yes it has been a long time. Too long. I've missed you and the forum(s). The car forums. These days, it's all about the diy home related forums. It really is quite amazing how different the tone, cultures, attitudes and and and are from forum to forum, skill set to skill set. Still, to this day, rennlist and the Porsche forum is the most obnoxious, lol...

A big yes on the paint. I've tested and it's toxic. To the best of my ability I do use protective equipment ppe... I have a ways to go. And so far it's been all fun and a cool learning curve. A few tense moments with my wife around "the work" that needs to be done and all of the choices that need to be made "together", lol. But so far so good.

So I had it wrong. I thought it was fuse #11 on both sides/fuse boxes. I better double check #10 as you suggest... Used replacements for the blowers are not too too expensive (if it is the speed controllers), but it's death by 1000 cuts these days with expenses. Unless I was mistaken and alllllll this time only ONE blower was working and then that ONE died leaving me with nothing, what I've been pondering is what would cause BOTH to go at the same time...? I saw in a thread here (different year car) that there were 2 relays. One for each. But then I also saw (I think) in a the fuse chart that one of the fuses controls relays and then the other (drivers door box I think it was) controls something else to do with the blowers. I better have a closer look.

Then, there is the climate control module (also not toooo expensive used)... This could prove tough.

As always thank you for your attention AND your wisdom sharing. Very cool, very valuable - as usual.

On it goes.

Talk soon!

Default Frustrating!

Water and Jaguars don't mix it seems. Flood car.

Got alllllll excited thinking I had found the thing. These are found in the drivers side footwell JUST ABOVE where your toes would be when foot is on the gas (LH car)... Are these the right ones? Seemed to click when I had car on and would use the switch/button on the dash to turn the blowers and heat on and off... I thought (reading other posts) that they were higher up behind and deeper up in the dash...? Anyways,,,

Me, the maniac, some how had replacement relays on hand (which is crazy). I cleaned up the plugs, popped them in and NOTHING. No change. Maybe the blowers had been just one blower all this time and I just didn't know - and finally the one good one bit the bullet??? I checked the codes in the HVAC ecu and there are none.

Is there anything else in this chain of command between the HVAC control on the dash and the the blowers? There's the ecu, the fuses, the console at the dash and the relays. Could I be missing something obvious, besides the obvious, lol...? Ohhhh these cars!

They're not picking on you:- water (especially contaminated) and mostly anything electronic don't play well

The EG says 'driveshaft tunnel'. I don't think there's much else there.

Here's the interconnection between the ACCM and the blowers:

The switches with the starting handle above are thermal cutouts.

This what the EG states about the blower drive:

How easy is it to get to the ACCM or blower motor connectors? Can you measure what values you are seeing?

P..S. Hope my previous post didn't come across as a H&S lecture...

Good Morning, Michael!
As always right and good info. Thank you!

I didn't and don't take your wise advice, pointers and ideas in any kind of negative way - ever. I appreciate them. Even if and when the truth hurts, lol...

Going to keep this short as I am in my morning commute 😵‍💫

I don't know when it'll be but I'll be digging in to this thing. So much going on these days. I don't drive much recently (really hoping that changes soon) so what I think I'd like to do is get in there and first (thanks to the variable V info you provided) see if I am getting voltage from any of the four pins on the CC-ECU. Honestly, I don't know if I would be receiving ins and outs IF the internal controllers on the blower end are fried??? Or, if the ECU circuits are??? One thing could be, if the relays were causing the ECU to push thru a ton of resistance (for years) to operate, it could be that the ECU quit... Anyways, taking some readings would still tell me something and be a start. But, would the problem be on the blower end, or the ecu end? Electronics make my hair hurt 🤕

I'm feeling PICKED ON, lol...

More than all that, I'd like to see if there is some "simple" fix for the blower motor - if the problem does indeed lie in the blowers that is... I'm figuring (uh-oh) as these cars age there are going to be fewer and fewer of blowers available and more and more blowers failing... It'd be better for me (and hopefully others) if replacing a resistor or two, or replacing a capacitor (honestly I don't know what's going on in the blowers and what those other symbols mean in their internals from the ED) would be better than going on eBay and finding a 20+ yo replacement. There is a similar (maybe) blower motor failure on the XJS blowers where someone came up with a fix that doesn't rely on finding a replacement blower all together.

I really worry about the day that the LIMITS of what can be trick fixed (like the climate control ECU for example) and other highly complex components (for the DIYr) are reached. All these doggone ECUs and electronics 😕

Again Mike, thanks for your attention and support!
Talk soon!
