Default Brakes and noise at the shifter

When I push on the brake pedal, I hear a clicking at the shifter. What does this mean? I'm also having issues that there is little 'pedal' when pushing on the brake pedal and the brakes are not working properly.
Thank you for your help on this; I appreciate it!

The clicking is a solenoid on the gear shift mechanism so you cannot shift out of Park without operating the brake.

Do you mean that there is little movement in the brake pedal? Is it the same when the engine is running?

Hi RichardS, that makes sense having a solenoid on the shifter. With or without the motor on, the brake pedal has little resistance. I tried bleeding the brakes, didn't help. The brake fluid was a little low though, I've refilled the brake fluid reservoir, but haven't re-bled the brakes. Will do that today and get back with you.
Thank you for your help.

OK. I think you are saying that the brake pedal pushes down to the floor so it has too much travel rather than too little. These are the classic symptoms of either air in the braking system of a failed seal inside the master cylinder, assuming that there is no evidence of fluid leaking anywhere from any of the cylinders or the pipework.

Try re-bleeding the system at all four wheels again until there are definitely no air bubbles coming out of any of the bleed nipples. If the pedal still travels down too much, try pumping the brakes repeatedly and quickly with and without the engine running and see if you can build up some resistance in the pedal. If you cannot build up any resistance, then I suspect that the seal in the master cylinder has worn and you need to replace or rebuild the cylinder, although it is more likely to be air in the pipework.
