Broken Rear Shock absorber.

Broken Rear Shock absorber.
My rear shocks (non adaptive) are rattling and the rear end feals like its held on by an elastic band. Feels like one actually broken, which my former dealer technician tells me is not an irregular occurance on XK8 rear shocks.
At the recomendation of my idependant jag specialist I am replacing the origonal oil filled units with KYB gas filled units. The added bonus is I found them on ebay for only £57 + delivery eBay - The UK's Online Marketplace
Ignore the picture, mine have arrived and are the right ones.
They are apparantly 30% stiffer, but i'm informed most people can't tell the differeance.
I will report back once they are on.
regards

Gas Shocks have a Pressurized Gas in the Sealed Shock Body that keeps the oil from Foaming and loosing it's effectiveness.

Paul Thanks for putting me right.
All
Rear shocks on, but a rattle remained thats been there since I bought the car. I put it down to the head brake and carried out the dealer TSB and adjusted the handbrake. But the rattle remained.
Yesterday I replaced the worn rear roll bar drop links. But again the rattle remains.
It is a tinny rattle when I drive over poor roads. As a little test I found that if you put it in neutral and let the car roll backwards a few inches, then brake the rattle can sometimes be heard.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

That might be the decorative caps on the lug nuts. A common problem that can be fixed by popping the caps off with a dowel, applying epoxy and reassembling.
For a definitive test, wedge the caps tight with a wad of paper towel in the lug nut hole and go for a drive.
Or, you might have a loose brake pad.

1. missing / damaged housing clip
2. sticking caliper piston
3. caliper housing not free to move in caliper carrier
4. loose backplate
On the Handbrake:
1. broken / dislodged tension spring on handbrake shoes
2. worn pin / adjuster in brake lever
Jack the rear of the vehicle up with both wheels off the ground. Remove each rear wheel in turn and have an assistant operate foot brake and handbrake whilst you rotate the disc and check for anything sticking or worn.

Thanks just had the wheels off and its the inside brake pad. I can hold it via the top eye (not sure what its for) and move it up and down at least 5mm (sorry 1/5") whilst it makes the noise.
I now need to figure out why.
thanks

Horray my rear brake pads are now silent, due to fitting a new set.
These have a spring on the back which fits inside the hollow front of the piston.
The ones I took off has this spring removed. Why I dont know!
I have spent all day driving with the radio off so I can hear....NOTHING......well other than the exhaust!
Soooo happy
