Do the heated seats stay on after switch on or do they switch off after a time.

Or do they switch on and off

 

If I recall the button stays on until it is pressed again, but the heating element will cycle on and off.

You can see this by the light shutting off once the seat is warm enough. You can manually reengage it, or it will come back on later if it detects the seat is too chilly (I have no idea what temperatures or what sensors do this, but it works very well, I don't even miss having control of the heat intensity)
