Question Buy XK8 or NOT ???

HEllo guys. Thought I'd ask you guys this before any serious investments are made.

I'm interested in buying an '03 or '05 Jag. XK8 (with mileage around 50K max)

And wanted to ask you guys if you XK8 owners experienced much factory defects with your XK8's???

Do XK8's have often similar problems in common? Like for example: "many XK8 have bad tranny @ 50K miles"?? (just example, I dont know if they do or not).

For example I bought a Legendary motorcycle named: MV Agusta F4, and those bikes have very commonly an "over heating" problem.

Do XK8's have anything faulty (something that occurs very commonly)?

Just want to know what I'm getting myself into before buying it? Because I'm a college student and $$$ for fixing an XK8 is a big issue.

Please let me know. All comments will be appreciated.
Thanks.

'03-05 XK8? College student?

When I went to college the choice was Harley 165 or Cushman which was way better than Schwinn. Schwinn had a chronic pedal bearing failure.

'03 and up cars have had most of the chronic issues fixed. Except the convertible top latch hose failure, of course. Each car should be judged on its own by an independent shop.

If it has not failed, it will.

I have had 2 XK8's. The first had the hoses replaced at 40K, 82k and 106k.

The second has only had them replaced at 38k. Now have 51k and counting.

having been on this site for a little while I would say if you are looking to buy this car, HAVE CASH ON THE SIDE TO MAKE REPAIRS. If you do not want to make repairs, mess with stuff, then buy a Honda. I mean simple repairs like brake jobs, will just cost more then on a typical car if you are doing it yourself. These cars have flaws like most any other brand, it just cost more to fix at times. If you have the extra cash to deal with that as it comes up then BUY one, they are sweet looking, and everyone that see's it STARES at it.

As a rule the 05 is pretty sound, great engine, solid transmission. There has been issues with the tops, but if you search the forum, you will find we have a great bunch of guys that can help you through those issues. If you check other forum ie BMW,MB etc,all of them have issues, they are cars, that what keeps us on our toes.If you want a worry free, buy one new with a warrenty.

The MV Agusta F4 1000cc runs very very hot. The 750cc runs fine. They don't over heat and cook the motors. Its only a $150.00 water pump upgrade and 15min job to cure the so call over heating problem. Please don't bag the MV!!

PS : if you can afford it, go for the XKR. If you are worried about the tranny, get it professionally flush and purchase extended warranty if it is available.

Hehehe Thanks Grip..no you kidding me!!? Give up on the MV Agusta!!? lol That's the bike of my dreams!! I'll never get rid of that baby. I have already fixed the over-heating problem and I love the bike to death.

I'd love to get the XKR, but I don't think money will allow me.

Thanks for the comments guys.

Once you drive a XKR: you won't settle for a XK8. 2003 XKRs should be available for a reasonable price.

I'm with test point, 03-05 XK8, and you're a college student? Yeah, I was really happy to have that V6 Thunderbird with <100,000 miles. I had hit the big time!

Jaguar was rated number one in dependability by JD Power and Associates. However, I have to say, if you have to ask whether to buy an XK8 or not, this probably isn't the car for you. Go buy something else.

I have to disagree with you there. I for one was certainly not sure about getting a Jaguar since I am of a vintage where all I knew about Jaguar was Lucas and troubles. Coming to sites like this one and doing a bunch of research helped ease me into making the decision to dive in.

If you decide to buy one I would strongly suggest you buy the best low mileage car you can afford with extended warranty, preferrably Jaguar Select Warranty. These cars are very expensive to repair and do need more repair and maintenance than the average car. JD Power and Associates rated the XJ, not XK very high for dependability and customer satisfaction.
My XK was the most beautiful car I have ever had but it was the most expensive ownership experience I have ever had. Thank goodness for warranty. I sold it immediately after expiry of the warranty and now have an XJ as my daily driver. It is bulletproof without any issues whatsoever.
Good Luck
