I've noticed for a while an odd sound from the engine/trans when I push the gas and start off. It's only in first and second gear and its not consistent. Happens off and on. Almost sounds like a vibrating piece of flashing. Any ideas?
If its transmission issues, any preventative measures?

 

Check your fluid level. The symptoms you describe sound like you need to add fluid.

He makes it look so easy, but I can tell how ****ing nuts that is.

 

Yeah, for me, too many specialized tools and chances to screw something up. WHY did they make such a rediculous and complicated sealed trans???

 

These sealed transmissions exist for two primary reasons:

1. To make it extremely difficult for the average DIY owner to do his own drain-and-fill....

2. To allow the dealer to extort huge sums of money from owners to do a drain-and-fill....

 

Specialized tools? The only tool needed that I don't have is the pump. Everything else is available in your average toolset. The ratcheting wrench is not a necessity for the job, more like a convenience.

I could do it, but I don't have jack stands or a garage at the moment.

 

No garage needed if you pick a clear day to do the job. I prefer working outside anyway because visibility is so much better in natural sunshine. Jack stands are very inexpensive these days. Rick (joycesjag) and I did my wife's XK8 back in mid-July using jack stands. Not as good as having a lift at your disposal, no doubt, but still very doable....

 

Well, I'm notorious for stripping torn head screws!! And I don't have any air tools. Hoping Santa is listening!! (Maybe a compressor to start?)

 

You don't need air tools. Just use regular tools and muscle. If you can't either, get a torque, get a cheater bar, or go to the gym. Also, phil, with the amount of money you spend on the car, you're seriously telling me you're going to be stingy with tools?

 

Ok, seriously, I hate getting under the car on stands, just like Sam. I've got the jack stands, just used to do my front headlights, but I'm too paranoid to lift whole car and get under.
My brother usually takes my car to a friends shop where he had everything we needed, but he retired and the guy that took over wont let us use the lift.
And gym, three times a week.

 

I hate it too, but whenever I take the car to my gramps and put it on jack stands, I think "What's the worse thing that could happen?" My mind defaults to an image of the car falling and killing me, and then I'm all better. Besides, the tombstone would say something like "death by Jag".

Phil, I go to the gym 6 days a week.

 

Young people can go to the gym every day, but at 73 it takes me a day to recover. I walk on the off days. My $1500 hydraulic lift takes the windshield up to the ceiling, I couldn't maintain my cars without it.
