Default A/C vent problem

On my 2001 XK8 the far right a/c vent, even when fully open, send out very little air. I did a search but can't find anything about it. Of course there is the distinct possibility that this was caused by user error and not because there are no threads discussing this. I've even tried closing the other 3 vents but there is still very little air coming from that vent. Anyone else out there have this issue?

I think ( could be wrong) that there two fans. If one isn’t working the car won’t have even airflow from side to side.

When I open the other 3 vents I get plenty of flow through them. Would there be a separate fan for just this one vent?

Sounds like a blockage or partial disconnect in the vent ducting. Can you investigate with a borescope?

Hi Monarch,
I could if I had a borescope, but I don't. I've been trying to find some instructions on taking the louvers off but can't find one for that vent. I'll keep looking.

I think John on the youtube site, (To The Garage) did a video on repairing the louvers, It might show how to remove them, can't remember for sure.
Go to youtube and look up

Hi Jack,

I think that's the one I watched. It's for the center vents. I subscribed to that site and can't find one for the side vents. I'll keep gently working on it to see if I can get the vent off and maybe get under the dash to see if I can see the plumbing.

.It would be easier to first prove that both fans are working. Each one has its own fuse and relay that can be removed to check each works separately Each fan supplies the centre dash double outlet and one of the outer dash vents. But more easily, each fan also supplies an output to one demister vent and one footwell outlet that would confirm whether air is available to the side with your non-performing dash vent before you start taking things apart

^^^^^^ this ! ^^^^^^^^^

there are a few topics on this forum that deal specifically with the “no air flow” on one side. It usually turns out to be one of the fans isn’t working.

OP, I think you can do a forum search and find some information that may be useful.

We babysit my wife's 1 year old twin grandchildren on Monday and Tuesday, and today we're keeping them overnight for . . . I forgot why we have them overnight. So it's been a bit crazy busy here. I found the manual section that has the fuse layout. Looks like the passenger/right side fan motor is #11 on the fuse panel on the passenger side. I'll take a look at that tomorrow and see if that's the issue, assuming I can get out to the garage during their nap.

And here I was thinking that "retirement" would be less work than working. I guess I didn't read that "Grandkids" section of the manual.

Joe

Oh yeah, and tomorrow her other daughter brings over her 3 month old who we will have overnight tomorrow. And the hits keep right on coming . . .

This is what the manual shows for the Fascia Fusebox on the Passenger's Side and a photo of the box. It appears from the manual that the left and right side are reversed in the photo and the second fuse down on the left hand side of the box, the one just under the 5 amp fuse, is the 20 amp fuse for the passenger side blower. I opened the door to the fuse box on the passenger's side to pull the 20 amp fuse for the Air Conditioning Passenger's Blower Relay". The fuse looked fine. When I plugged it back in and cranked everything back up lo and behold the a/c is blowing fine out of both sets of vents. Problem solved, at least for now. Thanks for everyone's help.

Joe

not uncommon for the fuse box fuse slots and relay connections to have some degree of resistance due to the age of these cars.

Often, as you may have discovered, just removing and reinstalling the fuse and / or relay will fix a perplexing problem.

It's nice to know simple things sometimes do work. By the way, I noticed that the manual refers to it as a "relay" rather than a fuse. Is that usual?
