Default Can you lock the door without key or fob?

I haven't seen anything said aboout whether or not there is a way to lock the car without using the key or the fob. i.e., in my Explororer I hit the door lock button as I exit and all the locks engage.

I have tried pushing in the handle on the Jag while the door is open and that will not engage the lock. I much prefer to be able to have the keys put away before I exit the vehicle so I'm not fooling around with putting them up while I'm walking.

I suspect the answer is that the key or fob must be used, but just in case there is some kind of trick, I thought I'd ask. Thanks!

You can on a 1999 XK8, coupe any way. I have been doing it for the past week or so. Read my post here to see why I have had to use the key.

You can from the outside. Put the key in the driver's side door and turn it counter clockwise (I thinkk) and you'll hear it chirp and lock. Insert key and go the other direction to unlock.

(if counter clockwise doesn't work, try it clockwise. Whichever you hear the chirp and door locking)

Sorry, scratch all of that, I'm an idiot and missed the without key part. I only saw w/o fob.

I tried, but I can't figure out a way. I even tried the passenger side.

From the driver door, when open, you can't lock it using the 'handle in' method. It will not depress.

From the passenger door, it allows you to lock it, but within 2 seconds, unlocks again. Even a quick reflex door-close maneuver will not stick, it still unlocks.

If there's a trick, its a secret.

Do you have master key / valet key options in your XKs ? If you I would give it a try with master key . Perhaps it would make difference

It occurs to me that maybe Jaguar did this on purpose so that it's impossible to lock the keys in the car...................

I'm not sure it is impossible. I bet if you had the doors open, used the fob to lock it, and threw in the keys you could. I might be wrong though.

I tried it, but the handles wouldn't stay locked. I guess it is a good thing so you can't lock yourself out?

Nope, you can't lock it using the fob while the door is open, it'll squeal at you and when you shut the door it does the double-chirp/light flash. It lets you open the door(as it didn't lock) and it starts the count down chirp (like it's warning you that the alarm is about to go off.) (Just tried it but hit the unlock button on the fob before the alarm went into high gear.)

LOL!!! Put down the top---close all doors---reach in and press the lock in.

I think it is a intentional design for the mentioned reasons. God forbid we should have to concern ourself with managing our own forgetfulness. (Chuckles to all)

Just if you leave the window open, don't ever get too lazy to open the door from the inside without unlocking it with the key first... Took me a couple seconds to figure out how to turn the alarm off.

What you are looking for is a passive keyless entry system (PKE). I had this on my 1995 Corvette and really got to love this feature. Basically, the car locked and set the alarm when you walked away and then unlocked and turned off the alarm when you approached. For those time when you did not want this feature, there was a way to turn it off.

I suspect you can get an aftermarket PKE system for the Jaguar.
