Default Car Insurance 3rd part or Comprehensive? ( UK )

After 50 years of driving not had to make a claim but have been reading some accounts of peoples experiences.
Comprehensive.
You get a minor bang repairable with a new wing and radiator say ...they write it off and offer you £2000. They seem to have full control particularly if its at there repairer. I understand you can buy it back ..buy back your own car ? So that costs you money then you got to mend it and its on your log book.. Tell me if i got that right.
3rd party.
If I hit someone the insurance pays for there damage I take my car home on a transporter and do as I like. Mend or part it out. If its there fault I claim against there insurance ( dashcam essential) Did I get that right?.
Two Cars.
I have a range rover and a jag .. RR is comprehensive so I sell the jag to the wife and drive it on the "any car not owned by you ..3rd party" Clause. Yes /no ?

Insurance is complicated and very different by country.

I’ve uses Haggerty Insurance here in the U.S. (Michigan) for the past 20 years with my 1999 XK8 convertible insured for the past 10 years. Haggerty is a classic car insurer, but also do specialty cars. I’ve never had an accident claim, but my car is insured at a guaranteed value for replacement.
I valued my car at $15k, so if my car is totaled I receive $15k and can buy it back for an agreed price if I choose. I could get the car back, but would now have a salvage title.
I pay $400 (will vary by state, but here in Michigan we are one of the highest insurance rate states) a year for full coverage, guaranteed replacement value and towing. The price will drop when it reaches 25 year old mark. I was paying $225 for a 1966 Pontiac GTO convertible valued at twice the price.

I *think* there's something in the small print that requires the 'any car not owned by you...' car to have its own insurance. E.g. the 'what happens if you leave the car and it rolls into another' scenario.

I found that TP was almost never cheaper than fully comp but YMMV as they say. I got my Jag insured through Tesco for £158 I think fully comp but 6,000 miles pa. As I recall you do big miles in France so probably no help.

Do you visit PistonHeads forum? They have a lot of advice and experts on insurance there.

If it helps I own my Jag and a Honda. My wife insures the Honda fully comp and I insure the jag, both named drivers.

Well the dirty dogs. Probably postcode as they were cheapest for my wife on the Honda as well. We live in rural Worcestershire.
