Default car starts then cuts out

My 1999 XK8 yesterday started doing the following:-

The engine starts then within a couple of seconds revs drop off and it cuts out.

Second or third attempt it holds a bit longer runs lumpy at 4 to 600rpm then cuts out.

However if you start it, catch it on the throttle and rev it up, its then ok and drives fine.

Im thinking sticking throttle body but any other ideas would be appreciated.

thanks

Check the fuel pressure while the rough start is taking place. There is a Schrader valve on the fuel rail. Cleaning the throttle body and valve cover breathers is also simple and a good idea.

Hi Smoggy,
Sounds like you may need to do bit of cleaning in the throttle body. Try it first, it costs nothing but time and could solve the problem.

Also, nice to see someone else from where i came from.
