Question Car won't start - Error code P1316 (Engine misfire)

My 2001 XK8 has been standing in the garage for 3 months while I was in the UK. Last week my son took it out for a run and it was fine for about 45 mins...ran great. He stopped at a store and when he came out the car would not start.
He arranged for a flat bed tow and put the car back into my garage.

This morning I connected the ODB handset and got an error number P1316 also individual P301,2,3,4,5,6 readings. Plus a Yellow engine logo lit up and a Yellow Error " Engine Shut Down"

Reading the FAB's it may be the fuel pump fuse? does anyone know where this fuse is and what number is the fuse?

The engine turns over ok, just does not fire.

All the lights come up and it has a new battery.

If the fuel pump is faulty does it throw up an error number of the ODB handset?

I erased the error messages, the Yellow "Engine Shut Down" does not appear but the car still does not fire up....PLEASE HELP!!

This scenario of long term storage, one drive and then failure is a really common story for a fuel pump failure. Fuse is #7 in the trunk, but the fuel pump is the more likely culprit. You can also check for fuel pressure at the Schrader valve on the fuel injector rail.

Thank you WhiteXKR. It would appear the quickest way to test the fuel pump is the Schrader valve on the injector rail? Where can I purchase a meter to do this? Autozone etc...?

If it is the fuel pump as you expect, on a 2001 XK8 is this a difficult and expensive job?

This is the location of the Schrader Valve on XK8s on the rear of the right side Fuel Rail:

Before you spend money on a gauge just depress the Schrader valve with the tip of a pen after cranking the engine. If there is not a strong stream of fuel under pressure (have a towel ready) there is no need to measure it.

Other than releasing the fuel lines under the car, which is difficult to access, it is not a particularly difficult or expensive job. There is a how-to on Jagrepair.com and a video on YouTube. The video is for a 2003 however that has a different style of pump.

Thank you Paul.
Do I assume that I place the gauge on the valve, then get someone to turn over the engine while I monitor the gauge?
Could you please tell me what the pressure gauge should read?

See my post above that crossed yours... you may not need a gauge if the pump is dead.

OK, turned engine over, pressed down on Schrader valve...Nothing!!!!
Now assuming I need a new fuel pump.
Where is the best place to purchase one or what would be a reasonable cost to have one fitted.
Many thanks for all your help.

The XK8 fuel pump price from Gaudin Jaguar is $221 (from Jaguar) and $105 from Welsh Enterprises. Would you fit the cheaper pump?
Welsh tells me they have sold over 120 of these pumps with no returns.

I haven't used the Welsh pump specifically, but my experience with them are that they are reputable and knowledgeable.

Do check the fuse first though and make sure all relays are fully seated in the trunk fuse box before taking the plunge on the pump.

I believe they can be swapped around also as a way of testing the relays. Correct?

I have checked fuse number 7 "20amp" fuse OK, if fact I checked all the fuses all OK.
"Relays", there are 5? light brown boxes and some black boxes in there, which are the relays? black or brown? Which ones do I interchange to check them??

I got my wife to switch on the ignition while I sat in the trunk, but could not here any fuel pump noise??

The Pump is not very loud. When the Ignition is switched from off to on, the pump is energized for 1 second to pressurize the Fuel Rail. If you're in a quiet place and have the trunk (boot) open, you can hear the Pump if it's working.

You can for example, swap the fuel pump 1 relay with the fog light relay (See diagram). They are the brown ones. (Your car does not have a fuel pump 2 relay).

If still no luck, it is almost certainly the fuel pump.
