RE: Carbon ashtray lid on ebay
Nice work!
Me and Gordo were discussing chassis stiffness of XK8 convertibles one day, and I came up with an idea to make a carbon fibre engine bay brace to improve torsional rigidity. The concept is basically a big cover plate over the engine, with necessary cutouts for component clearance and cooling, that ties into the strut towers, upper radiator support, and back to the cowl where the OEM strut tower braces locate.
As the underhood clearance is minimal and compound curves would be required, it seems that carbon would be ideal for workability and strength vs. weight.Since you have familiarity with the fabrication, do you think this idea is feasable?
I expect this panel would be large, a bit inconvenient to remove for access to perform other repairs, and expensive. I don't know what thickness would be required to achieve the desired rigidity...but there is likely room to bolt on a 1/2" thick plate to tie everything together, and I think that would be sufficient to significantly brace the forward bay. Any thoughts from interested readers are welcomed.
