I had the same problem with the plastic runners on my front air vent. After reading this forum I decided to replace the unit instead of try and fix them. I may use the fishing line and pen insert idea on the one I pulled out, as a spare.
I just wanted to mention my own experience doing the change over as it didt run as smoothly as I had hoped. Firstly those "spring clips" weren't as easily praised off as I had hoped and I managed to snap a couple of them in the process. Also after I had slid the vent unit out from the dash, I wasn't able to access the plug further down the loom and disconnect it from the car.
I weighed up the options of dissembling the dash to access it or cutting the wires to the broken unit and splicing the new unit in its place. I feel like a bit of a hack, but went with the later. After this was done the new unit slid into place with out a problem and the wood trim snugly fitted back on. Because of the missing spring clips I placed a drop of selastic on the anchor points.

Help please! I managed to get the vent assembly out but I am having a hard time trying to separate the back end with the main flaps from the vent section. Wondering if the hot SC summers have welded the plastic half's together?

The intakes are plastic-welded to the main body. You will need to make a cut between the retaining clips to separate them:
