Unhappy Check engine symbol

Well, I have had my 01 XK8 a week, drove it about 200 miles today...and the engine symbol came on as I entered my garage after the day. I drove it about a bit tonight and can't sense anything wrong with the performance of the car. Is this something to be concerned about? I hate to have to take it to the mechanic if I don't have to do so.

Buy yourself a code reader, that will tell you what is wrong (hopefully), then everyone on here will tell you how to fix it

The check engine light indicates an emmisions-related problem with the car. And "emmissions" could be anything from a faulty intake air temperature sensor where the air comes into the car to a faulty O2 sensor on the exhaust. Anything that affects how much the car pollutes can cause the check engine light to come on. It isn't as severe as the restricted performance or failsafe mode indicators, but if you ignore it you could end up causing damage to the car. It's not a problem to keep driving it temporarily, but don't drive with it long-term.

If you go to just about any auto parts store (Pep Boys, Advance Auto, Autozone) they will hook up their scanner to it and read the codes for free. Write down the numbers they give you and then tell us what they are. We can give you more advice then. They will also give you a description of what the codes mean, but those are generic descriptions. The number is what you need. It will be something like "P1234".

Default Check Engine Light

Thanks. I just read somewhere that Autozone would read the lights. I did just get it inspected on Monday and it passed with no problem. I did get gas yesterday and I think not getting gas cap on tight can trip the light. If so I understand it will take a little time for it to reset.

Here are the Codes P1316, P1111, P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303, P0306 and P0307.

The guy at Autozone said I should replace the plugs.

Help appreciated.

Multiple cylinder misfires, air intake temp sensor, injector codes hmmmm, would be strange for that to go all at once I would be checking the large engine loom plug behind the throttle body as my first port of call

XKRacer is using that wierd version of English that they speak overseas. "Loom" means bundle over here. He's saying that there's a bundle of wires with a plug on it near the throttle body. Find your air filter over on the right side of the engine bay. There's a big, black plastic pipe that goes from the air filter to the back of the engine bay, just below the windshield. The black pipe takes a 90 degree turn downward into the throttle body. Look around there for a bundle of wires, and then check all of the connectors on those wires to make sure they are plugged in properly.

Also, it may just be a weird glitch. And I don't think those codes will go away on their own. Check the plugs, and then take it to wherever you had the codes read and ask them to read the codes again and THEN CLEAR THE CODES. If they clear the codes and they come back, then you have a problem. Otherwise, it was just a glitch.

In your first statement you say that you got gas and you think you did not get the gas cap on correctly. Did you check it and that it was installed incorrectly? If so install the gas cap correctly and clear the codes. If that was not the problem I would check your partload breather pipe clear and check your intake pipes and vacuum hoses for leaks.

Default Check engine symbol

Guys,

I filled up again yesterday. The light stayed on immediately after, but did not come on the next time I started. It has stayed off since. She is driving like a dream, so I guess it was caused by not tightening the gas cap completely.

It was a beautiful afternoon in Dallas Fort Worth. I grabbed the wife about 5 o'clock and we drove around some back roads in the Southlake/Keller area. A Keller cop got me going 42 on the 30 miles an hour road, but ended up just giving me a warning. I have temp plates so he knew the car was new to me, and said he would be doing the same thing in such a kickass car!!!
