Default Check Rear Lights / Cruise Control Not Available

Got an advisory message on the speedo of our recently acquired 2005 XK8 a couple of days ago - great concern to me because on a freeway at night when it cropped up. Motored on to our hotel, checked all the lights before shutting engine down and found all operating good.

Message was cleared next morning and all systems were good.

Later that day, the message reappeared and cruise shut off when again on the freeway. This time it followed going over a moderately stiff bump.

Drove home about 40 miles sans cruise; at first stop, shut car down and removed key. Reinserted key and the alert was gone when the engine was restarted.

Anyone have experiences with these alerts and have suggestions?

Hi Jim,
Check the brake pedal switch. As well as operating the brake lights it also disengages the cruise. Could be you have a loose connection.

Hope this helps,

You will find a lot of posts on this if you search the forum. The brake light switch is a common failure.

.... and an absolute bitch to remove and replace with a new one. Two people make the job go much faster, especially if the one laying upside-down on the drivers floorboard is less than five feet tall and no more than 80 pounds. Read the threads that pertain to this repair and you'll quickly understand why....

Complaint: on startup, all is well. Then after a few km of driving, the amber warning dash light comes on with " Cruise not available" and " check rear lights" warning text messages.

Correction: " Checked for stored codes . Found P1571. Brake switch fail, order new switch, Removed and replaced faulty switch, clear codes and road test ok"

PART LJB6420BB. "Switch-brake PE Switch"

plus two hours Jaguar dealer labour charges

A common problem but not so easy fix. The attached link will help you see your way to replacing the switch.
