Default Clock only runs while car is running?

I have a 2001 XK8 Convertible (without the Nav system) and the analog clock only keeps accurate time when the car is running.

Any idea what's going on or how to fix it?

Thanks in advance!

I think what this means is that the only time that counts is the time that you are driving the Jag

LOL - That's funny - doesn't help, but still appreciate the humor. I needed a good laugh.

Thanks!

sounds like the clock is wired on 'switched' power, and not a constant 12v. If you're good at electricity (and can pull the cluster out of the dash), it seems it would be easy to make the correct repair.

Surely there's not a fuse for the clock...is there?

Ken
Does it keep anytime when it's off or does it go completely dead. If it loses five minutes in five minutes then Matt probably right. if it just slows down or speeds up then it may be in the clock.

Ken
Do you lose your radio presets when you shut off the car?

There may be a small battery in the clock to keep it going when the car power is off, and this has finally failed to recharge properly.

Bingo! My hobby is watches, but I hadn't thought of that. I was trying to think of why it would run slower when the power was off. A quartz watch will lose time when the battery gets low. It will still try to "tic" every second, but sometimes there isn't enough juice there to make it tic over to the next second, so it loses time. I bet that is exactly what is happening with the clock. If you can figure out how to remove it I bet you'll find that it has a small watch-type battery in it somewhere.

Thanks everyone for the help. Lot's of good questins from the above posts so let me see if I can sum them up here.
* Does it keep anytime when it's off or does it go completely dead. -- It does run when the car is off it just does not keep time.
* Do you lose your radio presets when you shut off the car? -- Nope
* Surely there's not a fuse for the clock...is there? -- I'm sure there is a fuse but since the clock runs even when the car is off and the clock keeps accurate time while the car is running I don't think I have a fuse problem.
It will be a couple of weeks now before I can get my hands on the car again and take a closer look at the clock. My wife has the car for the next two weeks - she is in the Air National Guard and is doing her annual two week deployment. However, I have a copy of the XK8 Electrical Guide and will continue to study it to determine how the clock is wired.

Thanks for all the help!

Hi,
Did you sort out your clock problem in the end? If so what was the solution?
Thanks in anticipation,
Chris H
