Default Code P0853 Drive Switch. Where is this?

Hi All,
My 2006 XK8 won't start. It's throwing code P0853 "Drive Switch" malfuntion. For the life of me, I can't find the "Drive Switch". I got a "Rotary Switch", that is supposed to attach to the side of the transmission, but apparently, that's for older XK8s (which explains why I can't find it under my car, after HOURS of looking Doh!)
I'm pretty sure the car is not starting because this switch is telling the car it is not in Neutral or Park. I'm betting it's soe switch attached between the J-Gate and the Transmission, but before I crack open the console, I'd love to get an idea what I'm looking for.
Any suggestions what part I should ACTUALLY be looking for, or any suggestions what to do? Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer!

I bought a replacement switch, but my transmission does NOT look like this.

Yep, very clearly shows a different transmission than mine.

It definitely sounds as if the car won't start because it thinks it is already in drive. I would guess that it is something to do with the solenoid which is directly below the little torx headed plastic cover which is at the top left hand side of the gearbox cover. I would try removing the torx cover (it's there to allow you to put the gearbox into neutral with the ignition off) and insert a screwdriver into the hole and gently move it around a bit and see if anything changes. If not, you'll have to remove the cover to access the solenoid. There are plenty of YouTube videos explaining how to do this as it's quite tricky but look at O&DR Modurol for a recent good video.

I think you have the ZF 6HP26 transmission. That trans does not have an external range switch. Everything is internal. You're going to have to drop the pan in order to access the position switch. Take a look at the following link. They repair these, so I'd contact them first and discuss your symptoms.

Do the later 4.2 X100's not even have the interlock solenoid and the torx-covered release screw?

x103 and 105 has a linear switch on the shifter and a digital range switch in the tcm

there's still a not-in-park for the beeper but the ecm is what controls the starter on a 103, P/N status is on a dedicated line from TCM to the ECM.
