Code Reader Recommendations
I think it might be about time to buy a code reader to help with maintaining/repairing my 2001 without going to the shop. I would appreciate recommendations on an OBDII that is user friendly and not too expensive. How much of the analysis codes provided by generic readers is applicable to the Jag?

I have the Android App Torque ($4) with a Bluetooth adapter ($32 on ebay) and like it a lot. I also use the Bluetooth adapter with my laptop and several free programs from the web. I will have to look when I get home to see which one I am using.
Has worked on 2006 VW, 2004 Infiniti and my 2002 Jaguar XKR.
Plus, Torque is cool. So that gives it a boost in my book. ;-)

Walkman 1:
You're limited to the AutoEnginuity with special Jag software @ approximately $480 if you want to get all the benefits from a OBDII scanner. Unfortunately, that's alot of $. They can be bought on EBay.
If you're wanting a stand alone scanner at a lesser price, Walmart.com sells the Innova 3150 with CAN/BUS and ABS for approx. $153--a good buy. The link in #3 has pretty good info about this subject too. You'll also need a good multi-scan tool too.

Bamaman,
The other day, I cleaned my throttle body and MAF sensor on my 2002 XKR. When putting everything back together I forgot to connect the hose that goes from the air duct to the cam cover.
The next day, the check engine light popped on and the car went into restricted performance mode. I busted out my Bluetooth OBD2 adapter and my laptop. There were two generic OBD2 codes about running lean. The software also showed a Vehicle Specific code (that is what the software called it). I forget which one, but I googled the code and it said it was the MAF sensor.
I then thought maybe I screwed up the MAF sensor while cleaning it. So I popped the hood and low and behold, there was that hose not connected. I connected it, cleared the codes and bam, good as new.
So, it would seem some vehicle specific codes can be read by the cheap (free in this case) software.

Based on Gus's post above, I reviewed the available choices and bought an ACTRON CP9185. I found it on an eBay auction. It was new (but not in factory box) for $160 from a private seller. The deals are out there.
I just hooked it and got a P1111 so both the reader and the car appear to check out OK>
