Convertible headliner
My headliner is looking decidedly past its sell by date so I've been looking at a replacement from Tops Online. My question is has anyone fitted one of these themselves or is it a job best left to an upholstery shop?
I have done it, but it is a very fussy job. You will need to drill out pop-rivets and have a pop-rivet tool to re-install them. If you do it allow a weekend, and take picture as you go to guide reassembly. Note also that the rear window inner frame will need to be reused (unless you get the expensive Jaguar OEM headliner). The old headliner was sewn into the frame, but the replacement can be glued in with headliner adhesive spray.
Shortly after I got my car, the local mice decided that the nice soft foam-backed headliner material would be great as nest lining. I no longer leave the car in the garage overnight with the top down and covered by the boot cover. (I live in the country with a stream nearby) I found a local car upholsterer who made a replacement from scratch using the old headliner as a pattern. He did an excellent job for 200.00 total.
