Isn't that curious: The Coupe is significantly lighter than the Convertible. The extra bracing and hydraulics weigh that much more than the roof and that huge rear window? How interesting. I like my coupe even more now!

If XKR's are 52/48, XK8 Coupes must be closer to 50/50, right?

My '97 owners book doesn't have such detailed info.

Isn't this listed on the sticker on your driver's door jam? It is on my 1998 XK8. Right about the manufacture date as I recall.

I think that is GVW and not empty weights.

I thought most all Converts were lighter then the h/t versions of the same car.

Coupes are also generally more RIGID.
I remember driving my buddies 'E'Type OTS and how LOOSE it felt cornering compared to my 1966 'E'Type Coupe.

Jaguar also claimed better aerodynamics for the 'E'Type Coupe.

I don't know about the aerodynamics for the XK8/R.

All Very true, Bob.

The funny thing about convertibles is the weight distribution for traction improves with the top down vs. top up.

Back in the 1990's I used to race my mustang convertible at the 1/8 mile track with the top down because the 60ft times were consistently .1 seconds faster with street tires while the added Aero drag of the top down didn't show up on the time slip @ 80mph

In a 1/4 mile, top down would definitely hurt mph, but by the 1990's most 1/4 mile track didn't allow top down with out a rollbar/4 point harness, anyway.

As engineering a Convertible from a Coupe design always requires considerable stiffening (and consequently additional weight), several of the 'prestige' vehicle manufacturers now begin with a Convertible design concept and then create the Coupe version from that.

I recall reading about Jaguar taking this approach with the X150 and Bentley with the Continental GT.
