Default Crank pulley removal

Just about to do the timing chains and tensioners on my 1997 xk8, I don't have a crank pulley removal tool and don't really want to payout £140 for one any other ideas how to get the pulley off

Machine mart sell a universal harmonic balancer removal kit for about £20 - well worth it- just check it contains the right size bolts for the jag.

You can lock a breaker bar against something solid and use the starter motor to break the nut free.
Another way is to raise the car on a jack, lock the breaker bar on the floor and lower the car suddenly.

If you use either of these "unapproved " methods be very careful - the potential for personal injury is high unless you know what you're doing.

Alternatively you can wrap a strap wrench around the balancer and use the breaker bar in the opposite direction.

The best way, if you have one, is an air driven impact wrench - by far the safest and most convenient - it's the old story, the right tools make any job much easier. Good luck and be safe.
