Crank pully removal.

Default Crank pully removal.
I'm trying to get the crank pully off. However the screw holes don't seem to work. It seems the thread size is wrong. I bought the 8mm screws but they don't fit. I tried tapping them out with an 8x 1 tap and an 8x 1.25 . Neither seems to be the right size. What am I missing?

The damper IS M8X1.25mm.

The threads 'clog-up' with dust/debris and seem incorrect.
