As it seems you have the ealier engine with cable, just check how well it is adjusted up, it seems to me as if the throttle posistioning sensor isn't talking to the cruise properly

Good suggestion, I will try and let you know if it fixes teh problem. I guess that might increase the idle revs a bit, but worth a try. cheers

Update

Tonight I took up the tension in the throttle cable a little, just off the end stop, and the cruise control is 90% working now. It just fails when trying to 'resume' when going up hills, all other functions are OK. Replacement throttle body might fix it later, but I will live with it for now.

Last update, solved.

Found a split vac hose at the control solenoid a under he wheel arch. Cruise 100% working now. I hope this helps somebody else.

Cheers

Default Cruise C fault

Well, nothing good. No Vacuum problem. I checked to see if the diaphragm was holding, checked and replaced one T that I wasn't happy with. If I had a Troubleshooting chart it would help. I have Alldata but if doesn't have anything in that category at all. What about the Solenoids where the vacuum line is distributed from. I haven't saw where anyone talks of them? If you have been on here much you will see that I've been working at this for months.

You can test the vacuum solenoids by apply 12V to the pins and hear them operate. I had a bad tee in there that was not obvious but showed in a smoke test.

Did you ever resolve this? My car was in an accident and I replaced the fender, but the vacuum bottles were cracked. The 3 solenoids are connected and OK. I have no engine failsafe warning, but my fuel consumption has shot through the roof...

My question is: where does the vacuum originate, and, if I wanted to abandon the system, what should I blank off?

My theory is that the car is over fueling as it's sucking in air through a vacuum pipe. Any advice gratefully received.

Keep in mind this is an old thread, and you will probably get more response by starting a new one that includes the year and model of your car.

Assuming it's a AJ26 engine, the vacuum line to the cruise control starts from a tee on the right side of the throttle body (drivers side on RHD). Please read the codes and post here for better understanding. There are many inexpensive code readers, including smart phone apps. You could destroy the catalytic converters by driving with a over-rich mixture.

Default Cruise Control

Hi Guys, I'm knocking off my XK8 issues one by one and today it's the turn of the Cruise Control Failsafe Engine Mode. I have read the forums and found threads regarding the brake switch and so that was the first thing I checked. With the aid of my 10 yr old daughter who crawled under the dash, I removed and tested the two switches on the bench with an ohm meter and they both operate perfectly , one normally open and one normally closed. So the problem is somewhere else.

Here's what happens...... I switch on the cruise master switch, it lights up OK. I then drive at 40mph and press the '+set' button and the cruise control switches in and works for about 10 seconds, and then the failsafe engine mode with an amber light comes on. The cruise control master switch LED goes out but the car drives normally. The warning goes away after the car is switched off; left for a few minutes and switched on again.

SO it looks like it tries to work but then is getting disabled by something shortly after setting. I was sure this was a brake switch issue. Does the cruise get a signal from the TPS or from a speed sensor somewhere ? Any help would be appreciated. I have ordered an OBD2 scanner ( Innova ) so that night give some more clues when I have it.
My 98’ XJ8 had gotten vacuum for the Cruise under the Air Filter box. You have to pull it off to see if the hose is disconnected.

Thanks guys
I found the tee and blanked off the end of the pipe. It was sucking like crazy through there!
Lumpy operation gone and fuel consumption seems vastly improved. Time, and this tank of fuel, will tell how much!
Odd thing is: no error codes. I have an OBDII reader and a simple app. Gave error codes and "Engine Failsafe Mode" when the speed control solenoid plugs were unplugged, but since I've plugged them back in there are no codes (even though both bottles are cracked).
Fortunately it was only one tank of fuel that went very quickly, so hopefully the cats are OK. I haven't had the guts to push the speed control button and see what happens - I'm not THAT curious...

If it's sick enough it can't figure which codes to flag and in case you did anything to clear them and/or cause P1000 then it's again probably unable to flag codes.
