Default Cruise control retro fit

Can the cruise control system be retro fitted to a car that didn’t have it as an option?
what’s needed?

The adage is "anything can be done, given sufficient time and money". That said, you don't give us a whole lot of info to work with. What vehicle doesn't have cruise? Where are you going to get the components to install cruise? Donor vehicle? After market?

Wow, I'm surprised. I would have thought that they all came with it.

Well, my XK8 doesn’t have it. So I was wondering if the required components could be found from a donner car and retro fitted. Wondering what would be needed and if the harness connectors are all there etc etc.

I think yours is the first I've heard of without Cruise Control. A donor car is likely to have everything you need. Your car already has the brake pedal/cruise control switch, so I guess you just need the buttons, possibly either the module, or a reflash of whatever computer works with it. Early cars had a specific cruise control on button that was fitted next to the S. Later cars have the cruise control entirely controlled with the three buttons on the right side of the steering wheel. Some cars were fitted with an optional adaptive cruise control. These use a radar system to detect vehicles ahead of you and adjust the speed accordingly, that is a rare option. I suspect the wiring to all be there in your car. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable can correct me on that.

I must say I have never heard of an XK8 without cruise. It has been standard as far back as the XJS series cars in the V-12 era. Jaguar is infamous for only using one wiring harness for the vehicle regardless of what options are ordered so most likely the connectors are there. To get a better idea of what you might need I would have to see a few pictures. 1. picture of the back of the engine (throttle body). 2. Steering wheel and 3. J-Gate console surround.
If i was looking for a donor I think I would stick to the 1997/1998 years.

Mine does not have it, although it would be of limited value here in any case.

On our older cars the cruise was mechanical, so there are vacuum reservoirs, solenoids etc. to source. SNG Barratt has collated all the parts:

This is for the XJ, but the parts are similar:

What about the electronic items?
steering wheel control? Module? What else is needed?

See the link to the XJ retrofit above.
You will need the steering wheel controls, a new J-gate finisher to accommodate the extra switch (+ that switch). It appears that all the wiring is present.

You could get away without the j-gate finisher and switch by just shorting the wires that would have gone to the switch so that it's permanently 'activated'. The switch is kind of superfluous because there's no real danger from having the cruise 'live' all the time.

I see a lot of cars in the US lacking cruise control. I got the build sheet for my car from my local dealer for my 2000 XK8, it says no ACC, I didn't think this was an option in 2000? Can I retrofit it? I saw a thread in the past and the answer there was no. Pretty much the only option I want on my car, it's pretty nicely specced.

Does the steering wheel have the buttons for cruise control? If so, then it probably has regular cruise already. The extra button on the shift bezel is for ADAPTIVE cruise control. I say this because my 2003 doesn't have adaptive and my wife's 2001 has it and she has the extra button on the bezel. The adaptive cruise has a sensor in the front that senses the road in front so if you come up behind a vehicle it will automatically slow down so you don't hit them. If they should happen to move aside or you change lanes it will resume the set speed. it only works when the button is activated.

i don't think that's true. I have it on the steering wheel and shift bezel. The button in the center for ACC says ACC on it. If you look the shift bezel part (which includes the buttons) changes around 2002 (I think?) for this purpose. It's unfortunate because the part containing the ACC button is significantly less expensive than the earlier part.

Default retrofit cruise control on lefthand drive XK8

I am in the proces of retrofitting cruise-control on my 1997 XK 8.
Happily I could harvest the solenoids, canisters and controls from a donor XJ308. in the steering wheel and the J-gate bezel of my XK8 I found the required wiring present.
I am wondering however where in the car the system should be installed. The car is a left-hand drive.
Anyone out there who can tell me what the location is where the solenoids and the canisters should be fitted? Also is the wiring for these already present is these cars?

Thank you in advance for a good advice

I see there are several aftermarket kits available on Amazon for $250-$350. The reciews on a couple seem good. I am thinking about trying onee for my XKR.
Yes, my XKR has cruise, but its the adaptive cruise, and the radar sensor has gone bad. Ive been searching for a used replacement. but struggling to find the Delphi model with the same numbers. New units are about $4k! I have read that its possible to "program out" the adaptive module and have a regular cruise - I would love to do this, but none of the armchair mechanics on the forums have yet ome up with a procedure to do this. if anyone knows how - i will offer a cash reward!

Cheers all
