Morning all,
ive had another go at this today, can get the guages out in no time now lol.
checked all the solder joints for connectivity to the ribbons and all were good. Had a look at the rear abs leads and they looked ok and ive just cleaned all four sensors. Gave the electrical connectors a good clean on the back of the gearbox. All fuses checked and relays.
So I went for a quick run round. Almost immediately I got all the lights back on that I had cleared off. Abs dsc cruise engine management. Car drives perfect but something isnt getting a signal. Im thinking a bad earth , and i will try and clean as many as i can find next.
The only other thing I can think of is I added an extra earth strap to the engine, I might remove that while I'm at it.
Anyone any other thoughts please. Many thanks in advance.

I've got to say I still think your instrument pack is suspect given that it has had a previous repair. Given that a replacement can be had for under £100 I would be sorely tempted to get one and swap it - worse case scenario you have a spare set of clocks.

I don't know if your scan tool can show you the individual wheel speed sensors live data? Maybe a clue there is something is not right.

Your extra earth strap shouldn't cause any issues. I added an extra one to mine rather than try and get the old one off - didn't cause any problems for me.

ETA: Did you reflow/resolder those joints on the gauges? I think that is worth doing even if you are getting continuity ok.

And see if anyone else has any ideas.

I'm under the impression the gauge cluster is specific to the car and any replacement would need pairing?
I left the joints after checking for continuity.
I watched o and d modurol who suggested an extra earth strap and i put one on my xjs, he warned of a possible ground loop which made me ask.
I disconnected the earth from the battery and got a lot of sparking on reconnecting. I also got some sparking when I cleaned the gearbox earth with a wire brush yesterday?
No surrender!

You would need a cluster with the same part number from the VCATS label in your boot. As long as the VCATS match it's plug-and-pray. The odometer would show the mileage from the donor car, but no programming is needed.

Re your earth strap I can't see how you would create a ground loop as you aren't changing an individual module's ground connection. The modules still go to the same ground studs, it's just the path between those studs that you have added to. No harm in disconnecting your strap though to see if it matters.

you have stacked faults. clusters have issues with busted speedo drivers, you can see real reported wheel speed with your scanner but right now this is the least of your problems.

first check and see if you have comms and or dtcs in the adaptive cruise module.

then go see what you have in the abs/dsc module. the mk25 dsc modules have problems with wheel speed tracks going intermittent and sometimes the whole module just goes no comm

That's beyond me I'm afraid. I wouldn't know where they are or how to test them. Starting to look like i need help.!

Hi lads, had a quick 5 minutes on this today. Didn't re solder the joints as I didn't have time but that is next. I plugged the scan tool in and it didn't show a connection with the acc. It also gave me a left rear wheel speed sensor, though ive cleaned them up twice. I unplugged the reader and plugged it back in , and it gave me one or two other weird faults. Air bag and seat restraint. I think I need to resolder the connections and have another look.

Did you clean the wheel sensor plug connection or just the sensor? It could also be a fault in the cable. Check if you have a signal at the abs module using the ohm meter.

While turning the wheel the ohmmeter shows a change in resistance as the teeth move past the sensor.
