Default cruise control not functional message

Folks,

Driving into work in my 04 STR with the standard cruise control and got the yellow light with the message "cruise not functional" message.

Anyone know where to look to start addresssing this issue and do standard OBDII readers access the right module or have a recommendation for one that will get the codes?

I'm working on the basis that you do not have the quite rare adaptive speed control module.

Without it, I believe cruise control is handled by the PCM.

I think, but am not sure, that the problem could be caused by a code being flagged in the PCM and those are readable by most generic OBD tools. So, if you have reasonable access to one then well worth a look.

That may leave some more issues such as sensors that don't throw codes or haven't yet. Or I guess a TCM issue where it for some reason tells the PCM it can't handle cruise (I cannot imagine why this might happen but I suppose it might be so!).

I believe ABS faults inhibit cruise but then you'd have an ABS fault and you've not mentioned one so it's probably not the ABS
