I remember someone designing a replacement cup holder for the center console but cannot find a link to it. I believe that individual was in England.
Anyone recall this?

 

I've seen a couple different methods to adapt or replace the cupholder. One had inserts mounted into the arm rest itself or used a different models arm rest (no built in cupholder) that was a bit longer and modified the end where it latches to install a cup holder

 

The early XJ40 center cubby lid has no cupholder and will fit the console.

The magnetic latch and the lever latch are somewhat interchangeable.

Colors will not match exactly.

 

The 2002MY> console lids have the steel hinges and modified cupholder trim cover.(bulges for the hinges)

The steel hinges interfere with the earlier trim covers so there are fitment issues mixing the cupholder/trim cover combinations.
