Default Cyl # 6 Misfire on 99 XK8

I get the codes P0306 (Cylinder 6 Misfire Detected), P0356 (Ignition Coil F Primary/Secondary Circuit Malfunction) and P1314 (Misfire Rate Catalyst Damage Fault - Bank 2). So what i did was to switch the coil from cyl 6 to cyl 8 hoping that i could get the code P0308 and find out for sure that the coil is the problem but negative, i keep getting the misfire on cyl 6, so what else is left? either the ecu or the coil harness, i read that insufficient power to the ecu either from the battery or the alternator could provoke this issue, is that right? i just recently bought this car and i got a brand new batt for it which is CCA 750 and CA at 32 930, RC 135. I will appreciatte your input on this!

Which #6 cylinder are you working on? Lots of confusion on cylinder numbering.

Paul,

Great addition to the JTIS cylinder layout!

Worthy of FAQdom.

Matt?

check power at the coil. negative is the trigger form the ECU. better yet get a NOID light. Youmay either has a open circuit or the drivers is bad in the ECU. Is it constant misfire or random?

that happens when the battery is disconnected, thought you knew that fact, therefore, did not mention it. apologies.

Sit inside, close the door. Press window switch up till it closes, then another 3 seconds or so, you'll hear a click. Press switch down, do the same thing...click. Now its programmed. Repeat for the passenger window.

I think disarming the car with the remote after an alarm activation will clear it. it did on mine.

Default valet mode

on the 1999 xk8 if you don't have the key fob, simply open the trunk with the key. look for the key hole between the letter X and K on the rear of the car. Valet mode will reset upon opening.

Hi there - I was just checking out the forum as I have a 2001 that has developed exactly the same "bug". Misfire #6 - changed over the plug with #8 and still showing #6 error - you mentioned that you found the issue was "where the wiring was". Can you let me know what that means? I've spent so much time and energy keeping this car running and I can't justify another $1,500 bill if it's a simple fix.

Cheers!!

Steve

Not sure if you took the suggestion and started a new thead but,,, im here now so i guess ill just,,,,

I have a 2002 with 4 wires to each coil. The numbers of plug wires to each coil changed over the years so,,,, well you get the idea.

After 20+ years for running and fiddling the wires chafe and crack. Wire becomes exposed and will corrode... Check the wiring to each coil and see what you can see. Sometimes its not so obvious and its easily missed
