Default Damaged my Detroit wheel!

The nightmare has happened, I hit a pothole on the way to work, later that day, the tire was flat. The trim ring was pushed out of shape in one spot, but not actually dented. The inner edge of the rim was undamaged. I dropped it off at the BMW dealership of a friend and they are having an alloy wheel guy come to look at it. I'll hear soon what he thinks. I was just wondering if there have been any developments lately on repairing these wheels that I should be aware of.

Ditch those wheels and buy a set of Apollos.

Keep those wheels, they look more aggressive, Ideal for a XKR. You don't want wimpy wheels on it. Just take a look at any XKR without them. I think Coventry West repairs them. There was a post a few months back on the repair. Replacement rings are available.
Good Luck

I agree, I bought the XKR because the wheels and Brembo brakes made it so special looking. I would sell it without the look I like. Thanks for the info on CW, if it gets to that, I will send it to them. Dick Maury there can rebuild anything!

OM;

If you have not seen it check my thread on BBS wheels today:

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...usiness-65145/

For info on replacement wheels and pieces.

I agree with you and RC the wheels are an important integral look of the car.

Detroit's were a requirement of my XKR search.

On the other hand I realized years ago that the only time you see wheels is when you are walking towards the car......so perhaps my 'valuation' of them is a bit misplaced.

Good luck with your wheel and let us know how it turns out.

cheers,

jj

New information today from the Dealer, the wheel is unrepairable, the interesting thing is that Jaguar has new ones and will be shipping it today, to the tune of $950. That was one expensive pothole! $950 wheel and $400 tire. The fortunate thing is that insurance covers it.

Thanks OM;

Jeeze that is a whacking great $5400 if you need a full set, plus balancing and installation....or 20-25% of the value of the car.

I am feeling a lot better about the set of four new 20" Detroit wheels I bought yesterday for $1850.

Glad your insurance covered it.

cheers,

jj

oldmots,

Did you get a photo of the damaged wheel? Interested to see what is borderline between repairable / not repairable.

I have the Sepang's. These are £760 on Jaguar UK today which is on a par with your dealer quote for a Detroit.

Please to hear your insurance covers both wheel and tyre. We'd have a fight on over here to get 100% recompense for a similar incident.

I haven't seen the wheel without the tire on it. The word is that the alloy wheel repair co. felt that the rim repair would not be within their safety parameters. I was thinking this may have been the problem when the tire lost air after the damage. I will look at the wheel later and see if I can take parts off of it and maybe dsell it as a damaged wheel for someone else to try repairing it.
