Default Dash pad removal and covering

I would like to cover the upper dash pad in leather and having it out of the car would be the way to go if it is possible to do. The JTIS procedure for dash removal is daunting to say the least, but what isn't obvious from the description is whether the upper pad actually separate from the rest of the structure.

Has anyone ever removed just the pad? Is it even possible?

From the parts manual, it looks to be one single moulding........

The dash comes out as a whole assembly. If you are going to do this make sure they use a very thin leather as it is much easier to work with. You have to remember you are changing the size of the dash by adding a layer of leather so everything needs to be modified to fit back in, ie gas cap release-center dash mount-fascia speakers etc. When I did the dash we covered the lower panels including glove box & center console all to match. Best of luck as it is a major project.

The upper fascia is faded and a bit shabby looking but the lower parts are in reasonably good shape so I was hoping to leave them alone. If it is all one assembly and comes out as such, it seems as though covering the upper may not be much less complicated than covering the whole thing.

Having done it once, would you do it again?

As much as I like the idea of leather on the dash, reading through the removal procedure gives me some pause.

What other options have people explored? I have heard of painting the dash, which sounds to me like it would look terrible, but I have never actually seen one done this way.

Funny stuff. Pretty much every year you see someone try to fry an egg on the sidewalk or otherwise cook something. Sometimes they are even successful.

I try to keep the car under cover if at all possible but the previous owner was not so particular about parking. The dash is sun burnt and the rear package tray is toast, so I am looking into options to rejuvenate the interior.

With the cross section of people on the forums here, I figure there is just about every experience (good or bad) that can be had.
